We have traveled for at least a week every year but one of having kids (we have always lived far from family). We always do Santa before we leave and just say that we wrote him a letter (or in recent years actually write it) saying when we are leaving and asking him to come early. They get a lot of grandparent gifts so we really need to split it up and no way I’m hauling it all back. But also, I really like having a Christmas Day that’s just for us so I protect it. Even if it’s the 21st, we do Santa, open other gifts to each other, make special food, and usually stay home and have family time.

We go to the cottage, and we just say Santa knows where we’ll be. Last year we bought a rollercoaster that wasn’t going to fit in the car so the weekend before we set it up in the basement and left a note at the front door saying it was too big to fit in the sleigh so Santa had brought it early.

We have done it both way, one where Santa delivers the gifts home, and the other where he delivers to our location. It depends on what the request is too. One year, we got one of those huge ride on electric cars and there was no way to have it our destination. On Christmas, we used our video camera to show our son that it had been "delivered."

My son is all about the set up, so when he writes his letter to Santa on the away year, we specify where we would be in the letter. This way, Santa knows.

We leave a note with the cookies telling Santa where we are and what to do with any gifts. Usually to leave them under the tree. I am too lazy to haul those gifts to grandmas just to bring them back. But we typically return home late Christmas day or the next morning, so the wait isn't too long. We all still love the magic of Christmas but treat it more as a season vs. just one morning.

My friend's mom told her when they went out of state for Christmas that Santa just knew where they were. Like he knows if you're naughty or nice and keeps an eye on you all the way up to Christmas Eve, he'll know you're at Grandma's house instead of at home. 🤷🏼‍♀️

If you travel for Christmas and “believe” in Santa, how do you handle gifts?

We’re going to be flying cross country for Christmas with the ILs. The last time we went at Christmas LO was a baby. DD heard me tell MIL that we’ll be there for Christmas and she wants to know all the details of where Santa will bring gifts.

DD is already starting to question Santa and logically I’m ok with her figuring it out but part of me would like one year where both my kids (DS is 3) believe.
