I am a nanny too and I think especially in light of your most recent post your gift is absolutely perfect. I am honestly touched to be thought of this time of year and a kind card goes a long way.

thanks for the input everyone. i like the idea of a weeks pay, but we just cannot afford that. we are still paying her regular salary, she is not working the whole week except to come take care of our cats once. and that was optional. we asked her because we had no one else to ask, but if she was going away we would have figured something else out. i just didn't feel too bad asking her since she is getting $600 anyway for basically coming to our place for 20 minutes. If we were not going out of town, we would be working at our jobs monday, tuesday and friday, and then saving our vacation days for another time and would then need her to work monday, tuesday and friday (she would obviously have the 25th and 26th off no matter what). so she is getting some bonus days off since we are going away.

she is also a temporary nanny that we have for only six months so i am not sure if that makes a difference in terms of giving a weeks pay as a bonus.

we are also very accommodating as she has some medical issues come up as soon as she started working for us and she has needed days off which we gave her by using our vacation days at work and of course she has been receiving her full salary no matter what. and there will be more time off that she needs in the next few weeks and we plan to always give her full salary (luckily i have a couple of friends that can help me out for a few days if i or DH can't get more time off work).

So i *hope* she is happy with a gift card for $50 and not expecting more.....the responses here definitely swayed me to give more than less though!

holy crap. I think your original gift is still plenty generous! I did not get paid for the time off, but did get a generous gift (100 or less gift card, I think)

@californiadreams: Since you are paying her a full week at Christmas and she wont be watching the kids I think that is plenty - but then maybe put another $25-50 in card and say "thanks for watching the cats"

is she a babysitter that you pay hourly or a nanny that has a salary?

if we're talking about a sitter that you pay hourly when you use her but she's under no obligation to you for hours and can work elsewhere if she's offered more hours or better pay, then i think paying her for a week at a full time rate to just stop in to watch the cats and the gift card is plenty. if she is your nanny and is paid salary, the week isn't a gift or a favor- it's her salary & shouldn't be viewed as bonus vacation time either because she can't go anywhere, she has to be there to look after the cats. half a wk's salary, small gift from LOs and a few days off (not counting christmas day, that's a paid holiday) is pretty typical around here.

When I had a nanny I gave her a weeks pay. Now we do daycare so I gave each of the teachers $25. I think yah should go with $50 if you can swing it.

Not sure where you are, but in NYC (where I live) it seems the standard is to give a bonus of one week's pay. I'm sure it differs in other places but wanted to throw that out there.

I have a friend who is a nanny, she gets a week paid for Christmas plus a $100-150 gift, so I would go with $50.

I got my daycare provider (there are 2) each a massage which was $50 a piece...so as a nanny I think maybe if possible a little bit more.

I think for a personal nanny I would suggest $50. I did $10 plus a small gift for each of her three teachers at daycare.

@Mrs. Sunshine: she has not bought DS a gift so far. I hadn't even thought that she might do that! I will think about $25 though. that's what DH said, but i wanted to be more generous. thanks for the input from a nanny perspective!

I was a nanny for several years & I think that's plenty!! Especially if she bought you child(ren) gifts. If not you could probably get away with a $25 gift card & a heartfelt note in the card. As long as it portrays appreciation she will love it!

I want to be generous with my nanny, but also have to watch how much i spend on gifts overall.

Also, the week of Christmas we are going out of town and still paying her full weekly salary - we've only asked her to come to our place once to take care of our cats.

So i was thinking to also get a card and a restaurant gift card for $50. Is that enough? too much? just right?

what are you gifting your nanny for the holidays?
