We draw names for the adults on both sides of the family, but we always get the kids something.

We haven't drawn names on the in-law side yet so I'm not sure what I'll need. I haven't bought anything yet, but this is what I'm thinking

LO - (cheap) tablet & case, personalized book, Little People playset
DH - Keurig (why make a pot when he'll just drink one cup?)
Dad - Gift set for his new hot tub

I got pretty lucky this year - my sister/mom gave me ideas so I don't go overboard (which I tend to do)

Sister/BIL - Electric knife (they asked for it)
Mom - MAC Makeup
Dad - Sweater
Niece (13)- PJs + iTunes gift card
Nephew 1 (10) - PJs + Iron Man 3 movie
Nephew 2 (3) - Robe + slippers he's totally into robes right now
DH - nothing, we aren't doing gifts this year
MIL - toaster oven for her new house
BIL + wife - gift card
BIL's new baby not yet born - clothes
BFF - NO idea!
BFF's son (2) - Slippers + tonka toy truck
Work colleagues - I went way overboard last year baking way too much food, so this year they get a bottle of maple syrup each

@looch: I don't think you're a scrooge. I think Christmas can get way out of control. Then it becomes really stressful. I've been stressed about finding gifts for people, disappointed when they didn't like them as much as I thought they would, stressed about coming up with my own list of gift ideas, disappointed when I didn't get the one thing I REALLY wanted, etc. It's ridiculous.

My family is the worst. My DH describes it as "a frenzy of ripping open presents" - everyone gets everyone a million gifts and it's nuts. We have cut back a little, I try to only get my mom, dad, sister, and nephew 2-3 things each now. Might need to drop it down to 1 now, maybe 2 for my nephew. My mom has no intentions of stopping though, she's nuts and a shopaholic. I kind of dread it because she means well but she gives me a bunch of stuff I don't want/need and I feel guilty about tossing it or dumping it at goodwill.

ETA: my sister is also super greedy at christmas (she's older than me) and a label whore. Most of the things she asks for I can't afford. Expensive perfume, etc. She always makes my parents buy her big ticket items each year too - vacuum, leaf blower, new kitchen stuff, etc.

My Dad - golf balls

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I mentioned it to my mother first, she is like me and doesn't want any random stuff either. She's giving stuff away! She was on board immediately.

My brother, not so much. He wanted to get my husband some coffee cups, but my husband is sooo specific and takes pride in choosing that stuff himself. So I told my brother not to bother with the coffee stuff or anything for me and that we should instead just do gifts for the kids (my son was turning 2 and his wife was expecting). At first he didn't like the idea, but in the end, he was glad he didn't have to go to Banana Republic the night before Christmas to get me a pair of gloves, lol!

DH: I was thinking of getting him this poster. Also maybe a personalized ornament of our dog who unfortunately passed 6 months ago (we're both still not quite over him being gone...)

@looch: how did the conversation go? I hate exchanging gifts with my mom and bro. One year before I dated DH I declared I wasn't participating and they had such a huge stink over it that I ended up buying stuff on Christmas Eve. Christmas is my mom's favorite holiday, but she is so cheap when it comes to good gifts for me at least. Gift giving is about the gift...the thought doesn't count unless its what you wanted lol

@looch: As soon as DH's brother and his wife have kids, that's what we're going to do too. It is WAY too hard to buy gifts for adults, and frankly, we don't even care that much... It's all about the kids :) We've at least started drawing names with his family, so we have 2 less people to buy for

We cut out gifts for everyone except for the children. My parents are beginning to downsize, my inlaws already downsized and everyone else has tastes that are too specific and expensive to buy anything worthwhile. I don't need another candle or scented lotion, I don't want to give any picture frames or travel mugs.

I sound like a scrooge, but it has made the holidays so much more enjoyable to not have to buy random crap and pretend I bought it because it reminded me of the receiver!

@Silva: I actually did something like that for my mom last year. One of the things on her list was a new colander. I went to a cooking store she loves, got a nice colander and then filled it up with other things from that store (crackers, little jars of gourmet jam, some chocolates, etc.).
You could do a collander, pot, mixing bowl, etc. Fill it with things like measuring cups or spoons, dish towels, spices, olive oil, silicone spatulas, cheese grater, etc.
FUN! :)

@Silva: what about scarves for the 20s women? That's what I was thinking about putting on my wishlist for myself, cute scarves! Or some kind of jewelry? Something cool from Etsy? Do they like wine?

@cmomma17: The ticket idea worked really well for his parents. They don't need any "stuff" and it was a nice excuse for them to get a date night in. We contemplated movie tickets & a gift certificate for dinner, but the theater tickets were a big hit

@Silva: lol. Yeah I'm trying to get some good ideas early. We will have a pretty small budget this year and I don't want to be lame and just do giftcards :)

Ugggh.

We are definitely going to photobooks & a dvd with some videos of our daughter for both sets of grandparents.

My mom wants a new shirt for hiking.
No idea what to get anyone else- maybe others will have good ideas?

We have two mid-twenties women, a mid-twenties man (and his girlfriend), and both sets of parents to buy for.

Last year we got my husband's parents tickets to a show at a theater nearby, and they seemed to appreciate that. May go that route again this year.

I can't stop thinking about Christmas! I never do so early, but with it being LO's first I'm extra excited!

Want to share Christmas gift ideas? Not just for LO's, but everyone! We all might get some great ideas from each other.

DH - he is really into fitness right now so I've thought about getting him kettlebells or other weights for at home, or calipers for measuring body fat. If we had more money he'd want a fancy watch.

MIL/FIL - no clue!
My mom and dad - no clue!
My sister - No great ideas but most years past I have gotten her a perfume of her choice. I think we gave her itunes giftcards too.
My 13 year old nephew - no clue!

I have thought about DIY'ing LO's handprint ornaments for both sets of grandparents and my sister. I thought of doing photobooks of LO as well, and from that Pinhole Press website doing the names/faces book for LO.
