@locavore_mama: Here's my felt tree from last year.. we weren't even in town for Christmas so we didn't see the point of setting up a real tree.

@locavore_mama: We have a tiny living room. Real tree with go in the corner on he right of the TV, felt tree will go on the wall to the left of the tree, or maybe on the other wall on the right of the tree. I haven't totally decided yet.

One way or another, I may be looking for fabric ornaments this year for our real tree. Nothing we have is glass anyway, but I still worry about them breaking.

@bpcmarj: brilliant!! And yes, she totally does! Are you going to put the feet tree near the real tree.
Hopefully M doesn't still go for the real tree as I suspect she will....

We are going to hang ornaments that are not fragile at the bottom by string, instead of hooks. We'll see what happens from there...

@locavore_mama: This is the type of tree I am making for P. Felt is pretty cheap, and even me who is SO not crafty can get some scissors and a glue gun and make the ornaments! (ETA: Just realized how much the LO in the link looks like P from behind! lol)

What's the one finger rule?

LO one was mobile last year so we just didn't put any ornaments where she can reach. A little harder this year that she's walking.

I love the mini felt tree idea for her!!!! Maybe some yarn ball ornaments?
Does anyone have an example of a felt tree?

C was 9 months last Christmas and she did really well! She was crawling at the time. We put the tree on a riser to put it higher off the floor and then hung all the fabric and baby-friendly ornaments at the bottom.

We definitely wanted to teach her not to touch rather than just not put up a tree. We're going to do a tree this year too, she'll be almost 20 months.

I love the one finger idea!! I think we'll start practicing that on stuff now so he is used to the idea. I also love the felt tree idea for him to play with! I have leftover felt from his halloween costume so I think I'll make that today :-) You guys have the best ideas!

@T.H.O.U.: We will also be doing "one finger" and that's what MIL did for our nephew last year who was almost 2.

We plan on hanging a felt tree on the other wall in the living room so that she can play with and decorate that one to her hearts content.

My parents always tether their tree, using a simple hook painted the same color as the wall and a piece of string (just in case).

We haven't had a tree at our home yet, but my son isn't that interested past the first day...although, I expect this year to be different, lol.

DD was 6 months old last Xmas and we ended up buying a fake tree and put up felt, plastic, and wood ornaments. But she was never interested in the tree. I don't know what we're going to do this year. I kind of want a real tree in the family room (the room we spend the most time in) but I know I'm asking for a headache. It would be nice to teach her to not touch plants though (she loves messing with them).

C was 14 months old on her second Christmas, and we barely decorated the tree that year! She was into touching everything and would pull on the safe ornaments I'd hung at the bottom of the tree, so I took everything off.

I'm hoping it's different this year!

We did a tree last year when she was about 16 months old. We only put plastic stuff down low and tried to teach her not to pull it off. A good rule that we are teaching is "One Finger". It lets them touch and explore wtihout causing too much damage.

We went and bought cheap fabric/felt ornaments from Target that first year. A bunch of snowflakes and cable knit balls. It worked out well and didn't look too sad. He actually left it alone for the most part, though.

We put a few ornaments at the bottom of the tree that were okay for touching. I have a collection of about twelve Disney ornaments that are made of plastic. Since she was interested in Mickey and they aren't breakable those were okay for touching. We corrected her when she touched anything else.

I'm thinking ahead here, but what are your Christmas tree tips with LOs who are old enough to cause havoc but too young to really understand not to touch?? I'm dreading the thought of a Christmas tree this year but at the same time am excited to put one up.

*we can't put our tree anywhere but our main living space where DS and I spend the majority of the day.
