At Christmas/Hanukkah - if we open it with them, no. If they sent it, yes.

We are usually with my family for Xmas and try to do something nice for them while we were there to say thank you, like so the dishes and cook a few nights or take them out to dinner

I'm the same as @babynumber1: - if they are there when we open, thank them in person. If they are not there, send a note. The exception to this being a shower, where the opening is more of an event.

This will be LO's first Christmas but I will only do Thank You cards for someone outside of immediate family who sends her a present. We're with my family for Christmas so I wouldn't send anything to them and with ILs we just call and say thank you for our gifts so we'll do the same for LO's.

I don't have a LO yet but in my family we never did thank you's for immediate family (like grandparents) but we did for aunts/uncles/family friends if they were not present when we opened the gift. If they were there when we opened it, we said thank you immediately and then usually again before we left.

We usually don't do thank yous for chanukah. If a family member that is outside of our immediate family sends her something then I will. And I have a friend who always does thank yous so I'll send them one too. But for grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. we don't.

Our rule is that of they are their when she opens it, no thank you note. If it is sent in the mail, we send a thank you note. We do that bc in our families, we don't do thank you notes for Christmas.

I *always* do some kind of thank you. For family, I will sometimes just take a pic of LO with the gift and email it.

My MIL just sent a hand knit sweater this past week out of the blue. I made a quick iPhone video of him wearing it saying thank you (he's 2.5). She loved it. I think it is proper to acknowledge all gifts in some way.

I am finishing up writing R's baptism thank you notes this weekend. Between the baptism, baby shower, and new baby gifts, my hand has been killing me for months!

I always wrote thank yous for birthday gifts and things like my first Communion. I cannot recall if I wrote thank yous for Christmas. Do you write thank yous for holiday gifts for your LO?
