i do the same kind of 'CIO w/ paci' as you both mentioned above!
i put him down drowsy but awake and give the paci. If he cries, i will re-insert it a few times, but after that, it's CIO! If he keeps crying without stopping, after 20 mins or more i will pop it back in and he usually will fall asleep more or less soon after that.

he is 5 months and only gets the paci to sleep and sometimes in the car.

@babyjmama: we put her wubbanub in her crib, and she figured out how to reinsert the pacifier on her own! Sometimes if she cries for a long time and hasnt put the pacifier in but i know a pacifier will do the trick, i'll cheat and put it in for her!

@betsyboop: how did it go for you without the binky?! We had night 1 of CIO last night and I broke down at 4:45 and put the binky in his mouth. He fell asleep within 30 seconds, spit it out and is still sleeping soundly! I know I broke the rules but damn...I have to work today! Lol :-P

This is so encouraging! I'm terrified she will freak because she'll want her binky but maybe I think she's more attached than she really is...

we just went through this with our babies when they were 5mo using Ferber method. we first took the pacis away in the daytime so they only got their pacis at naps/bedtime. then we picked a friday night and went cold turkey. they cried for 30 mins the first night at bedtime, but didn't cry at all the second night. i had so much anticipatory anxiety about sleep training them, but once that first night was over, i thought - well, that wasn't so bad after all! and they now get 11+hours of uninterrupted sleep at night and our whole family is so much happier.

when we did CIO around that time, DD was not able to use re-insert the binky by herself, so that was the end of the pacifier... cold turkey! she handled it well probably because she wasn't so terribly attached to it at that age. We would probably not be able to do that with LO these days who is very attached at 13 mo without inflicting some major emotional distress. Good luck!

Tonight will be our first night of sleep training (yikes!). We'll be using the extinction method.

My question is regarding pacifiers...LO is almost 5 months and hasn't quite mastered properly reinserting it on her own so I think we're going to go cold turkey but I'm wondering if anyone did it this way and if so, how did it go?
