@mrsaudi: I'm on day 1 right now and am definitely interested in how your little one is doing too! J only cried for 35 minutes but who knows. The second he stopped crying I went running in terrified that he might have choked himself. I've checked him 2389472349 times to make sure he's still breathing and he's been sound asleep for almost 45 minutes! This is unheard of for us, he usually wakes up 30 minutes later and needs to be put back to sleep.

Hang in there mama. Hopefully each night he'll cry less and less, but the first few nights are the hardest.

@mrsaudi: he rolls onto his side or tummy. I used to always lay him on his back, but he would roll over. I usually put him on his side now and he will often roll himself. Very seldom does he sleep on his back!

So sorry, it really is the worst :( But don't worry about the traumatization. I've read so many things that have said studies show that it doesn't hurt babies to cry for extended periods of time. Colicky babies cry for hours at a time every single day. You'll see tomorrow morning he will have smiles for you and you'll see it didn't hurt him at all. Hang in there mama :( You will find a solution that's right for both of you!!

Thanks ladies! Definitely harder than I thought it would be. He cried for 1 hour and 45 mins and it never got better. He was crying so hard he was soaked in tears and was coughing.. I feel like I have traumatized him :( now I'm trying to rock him to cal down. Back to square 1 :(

the first night IS the worst. It's pure torture really. I was bawling my eyes out just listening to him.

I did the 5, 10 and 15 minute interval method as well and it seemed to only work him up more - he seemed to be more angry that I was coming in to soothe him.

After a week of CIO not getting a whole lot better, I changed my approach and switched to extinction - and the first night he was asleep in 10 minutes. I guess it was just stimulating him to have me go in there, and now that's the method he responds to the best. I hate it, quite honestly - but he is so much better rested and an overall happier baby because he sleeps better and longer.

However- my one rule that I stuck to no matter what was to follow my instincts. If I felt that he really needed me, like he was seriously emotionally hurt - I threw out the rule book and ran to him. I never wanted my sleep training journey to be riddled with regret, so I needed to stay true to myself as a mom. This definitely created setbacks and caused CIO to take a little longer for us, but in the end I was happy, Cobi was happy and DH was happy - we still are :)

Good luck!!! Just get thru the first three days - they're the worst- then it gets worlds better.

hang in there! i patted her on the leg, and said, "mommy loves you" for a few minutes before leaving. the first night is always the worst. i think the first night she cried for about an hour. second night was 25 minutes, and third night was a few minutes.

this is horrible, he has been crying for an hour now, i have done the 15 min intervals and shushed and nothing will soothe him. I need encouragement, i am in tears too. how long is too long to let him cry?
