@Smar11: Thanks for the info! I'm glad that it all went so smoothly for you! I'm on the fence about it as it is not the norm in my culture, but it is in my husbands. I have no objections to it, but wish we had been able to do it right away rather than stress about it being more complicated now!

@Aimed: I was super nervous about getting it done at his age. Especially having to be under general anesthesia. I thought he was going to have a hard recovery, would be hysterical at the hospital and was just dreading the whole thing. Much to my surprise, he has done fantastic! He was fine at the hospital, no tears at all...a little when we were able to see him when he came out of anethesia( which I expected), but other than that he pretty much acted normal. They sent us home with some prescription pain meds. I gave it to him the first couple of days, but to be honest I don't think he was in pain. He was running around and acting like his normal goofy self. His bandages were removed a few days after the surgery. That part was painful for him so I gave him pain meds that day, but after that day I stopped. The surgery was a little over a week ago and he is healing up really nice.
I was so relieved that I feared the worst, but the reality was so much better than I could have hoped for!
My brothers son had his circ done at 9 months and his recovery was the same...back to his normal self the next day, like nothing ever happened!

@Smar11: Not to thread jack, but wondering how your LO's recovery was at 18 months? For complicated reasons we did not have LO circumcised at birth and were then advised to wait a bit so he would be bigger for anesthesia. I am not wild about having it done at this stage (almost a year old) but DH would like to have it done.

DS #1 was done at the hospital, the day we left, by my OB/GYN. DS#2 will be done in the hospital as well, by my OB/GYN (she even brought it up at the last appointment!). She said she'll do it the day or two after he is born.

My son's circumcision was done by my OB in the hospital about 2-3 days after birth. I'm glad we didn't have to wait longer than that.

We are Jewish so DS had his done at eight days old by a mohel who was also a pediatrician. I've heard that when the baby is a little bit older that the blood clots easier/better...not that it's not totally fine to do it earlier!

I think going to a pediatric urologist would be great as long as they can get you in very soon after baby is born (I think 2 weeks is the max I would be willing to wait).

We had our sons done by a pedi the day after he was born. I always thought something was off about how it looked. I finally ended up taking him to a pediatric urologist who confirmed that the ped did not take enough foreskin off resulting in what she called a "hidden penis". We ended up having the urologist redo his circ last week at 18 months old.
I'm pregnant with another son and we will be taking him to the same pediatric urologist to have his circ done. I'm sure most boys who have the procedure done at the hospital after birth by peds or ob's are fine, but I don't want to chance it after what happened to my son.

A pediatric urologist will be more likely to do a good job with making sure everything is symmetric. Make sure you have an appointment and that they're willing to do an office circ. If you wait too long (several months, not days), they may opt to put your son under anesthesia. As a new baby, they'll use local anesthetic. Also, make sure your insurance will cover it either way! As a "procedure" it can be a heftier bill.

My DH and I are having a slight debate.... To have our son circumcised right after birth or wait for a Pediatric Urologist do it? Any stories to sway our decision either way?

We know a Pediatric Urologist who just had a son who choose to have the circumcision done 2 weeks after birth with someone on his team. My sister also chose this route too.
