@mjane: It's great! I'm pretty sure Arecibo does too but I've only ever used Eastern.

Pardon my ignorance, but taxi cabs do or do not have LATCH? Is it always a belt install?

@hummusgirl: I didn't know Eastern had car seats! That's awesome! Do you know if any other BK car services do? Life-changing (not exaggerating).

The Car Seat Lady has very good info on using car seats in taxis. The two convertibles she recommends are the Combi Coccoro and the Sit n Stroll. We have the Sit n Stroll since we used to live in NYC with a toddler. It's great for cabs and travel. It's just like having wheels on a convertible car seat. It's def more of a car seat than a stroller though. The wheels and handle on it aren't meant for long walks or uneven terrain, but they serve their purpose in making the seat portable.

http://www.thecarseatlady.com/taxis/using_taxis_2.html#convertible

If she has twins though, I'd probably suggest Zipcar or using car service over taking cabs. Once we had two kids in the city, we took much, much less cabs.

I have the Combi Coccoro and it's easy enough to install but really we rarely use it. We don't have a car and on the rare occasion we need one, we call a car service (we're in Brooklyn so we use Eastern) that charges $5 to use their car seat. The thought of wrangling two car seats in a taxi and then getting two babies in...no thank you.

The only real solution I've found is a Combi Coccoro. You can use it with a Snap n Go, you can buckle your toddler in it before getting into the cab, and it's relatively easy to install. Nothing compares to an infant seat, but this has been a workable solution for us when we need to take taxis in the city. We're definitely not comfortable foregoing a carseat - if we were without a carseat, we'd take the subway.

I think the combo coccoro would be great for twins since it's so small. And it's supposed to be super easy to latch while the meter's running ;)

Honestly, we just don't use taxis anymore. I either pay to valet/park or take the bus/train. I couldn't find one that worked in a convenient enough way while out and about.

Maybe someone who owns the seat can chime in, but perhaps a Combi Coccoro? They're fairly small and lightweight.

I'm dreading this when my LO moves up to a convertible. We still have her in her infant seat (she's almost 8 months) and we've used it a handful of times in a taxi (with our britax B ready frame in the trunk), since my husband can install it in about 30 seconds.

But when we have a convertible.....ugh. We'll probably just drive ourselves (we live in hoboken and have a car) or take the PATH or bus.

I have taken her on a bus without a car seat, of course. I just wore her. I just hate taxis already....I've been in so many near misses, I hate to think of LO not secured. And I have an acquaintance who died in a taxi (accident on the way to LGA). I just can't.

Agree with Lamariniere. NYC-dweller here and its legal for them to ride without carseats. I actually never thought of how you would deal with a carseat in the city unless it unclipped from your current stroller.

@lamariniere: I'll let her know. She's a mom of twins, so she's also looking at not one but 2 car seats in a cab! This may be helpful to her.

This is probably not the answer you are looking for but it is legal for babies and children to ride without car seats in taxis in NYC. My son was born there and we lived there the first year of his life. We took a taxi a small handful of times with no seat. What was I going to do with the seat when we got to where we were going? A snap n go was not an option for us since we already had a regular stroller.

Edit: we also didn't have a car, therefore not much need for a car seat.

Although expensive, the Diono Radians are great because they are thin, fold up flat and also have back pack straps.

Asking for for a friend who lives in NYC:
Can you suggest a convertible car seat that is easy enough to use in cabs? Do you find that one particular car seat is better than others for cabs? Thanks so much!
