Since you do have to travel, I'd get a convertible, it's got the longest life and you can use it rear and front facing.

I would avoid the Cosco Scenera, it's difficult to install rear facing without a pool noodle or a rolled up towel.

DS was born in NYC and while we did take a cab home, no one at the hospital physically checked for a car seat. We were in your situation, no car, no real need for the car seat, and we had a Maclaren stroller that wasn't car seat compatible. I ended up buying a used Graco carseat on Craigslist that we used for the ride home for the hospital and on just two weekend car trips with a rental car. I will probably be yelled at for admitting that we took a cab a handful of times that first year without a car seat. I KNOW THIS IS NOT SAFE. But it is NOT illegal in NY, and when we arrived at our destination, I couldn't have carried around a car seat plus a stroller. Sometimes you've gotta do what you've gotta do.

@Mrs. Bee: I'm so glad I asked about this, I had no idea that the hospitals here would require it! I mean, I'm sure they'll say so later on when I do a hospital tour and such, but I like knowing these things early :)

@Beehive: Oooh good to know! I had no idea that the hospitals here would have that same rule. It makes sense safety-wise I guess. I'll check out the Cybex Aton for sure :)

@nana87: a car seat is required to leave the hospital in nyc (i gave birth twice in nyc!). when your baby is a preemie, they also do an extended car seat test to make sure baby can handle a car seat (olive had to do it... it was like an hour!).

we zipcar and use the car seat, and we even take the car seat with us when we call a taxi. i just don't feel safe taking a baby in a cab without a car seat esp since nyc taxi drivers are crazy.

i would definitely get one!

@nana87: We're in NYC. You do need a carseat in order to leave the hospital - they make you show it to them and buckle LO in before you leave. We use it all the time actually, in cabs. I highly highly recommend the Cybex Aton - it's very light, and really quick and easy to buckle into a cab/car without the base. The shoulder strap wraps around the back of the seat. We can get LO into a cab in that seat in 2 minutes tops!

We ended up with the City Mini as our (one and only) stroller, and got the carseat adapter for it, which lets you snap the carseat on top of the stroller.

@LovelyPlum: I don't know if that applies in NYC? I could be wrong. My hospital is a 15 min subway ride from our apt, but then again I don't know that we'd want to take a newborn on the subway yet! Also cabs in NYC can legally take kids without a car seat, although that of course isn't very safe even if it is legal. That one looks really nice though, I like how lightweight it says it is, it'd be much easier to store in our apt when we aren't using it!

@looch: Oh good point! We have family out of state, plus at least one wedding we need to fly to that first year.

I could be wrong, but I think you need one to go home from the hospital. What about something like the Combi Coccoro?

So I'm just on the cusp between my first and second trimesters, and thinking ahead about gear we're going to need...We're in NYC and don't have a car, so I'm not sure we're going to need a car seat, except we do every once in awhile take cabs or zipcars...Like, we'd probably want to take a cab home from the hospital, and my parents live a bus+subway ride away so it's a lot faster to cab it than deal with transferring.

So here's my question: if you primarily rely on public transportation, did you also have a car seat? If so, is there one you recommend?

I've only ever seen IRL car seats with a base that's installed in the car, so the seat clicks in and out easily, but since we won't be using the same car that won't work...And I don't think I'd want our primary stroller to be one that fits with a car seat, since we'd want our daily stroller to fold up easily to save space in our apt, in restaurants, in the subway/bus, etc...But we'd probably want the option of a frame if we do get a car seat so that we don't have to carry both a stroller and a car seat when we are using a cab...So much to think about, it's a little overwhelming!

I'd love any tips or to hear about what all you other lovely city moms do!
