We had the same issue! What @Beehive: said was our issue: "My first thought is that perhaps the pitch of your radiator or pipes is off - it's tilted the wrong way so the water is collecting in the pipes and making that banging sound when the steam hits it."

Our super put little pieces of wood under the radiator to re-level it and stop the water from collecting and making the banging noise. Keep contacting your super until it's fixed because there's definitely a way to do it!!

Banging steam pipes are the worst! We had the problem in our last apartment, and it was one of the reasons we moved. There are ways to fix them though - they are discussed pretty well in this thread: http://www.brownstoner.com/blog/2005/11/front-page-foru-10/

My first thought is that perhaps the pitch of your radiator or pipes is off - it's tilted the wrong way so the water is collecting in the pipes and making that banging sound when the steam hits it.

I hope you're able to get the radiator fixed!

@raintreebee: So sorry, I was going to suggest bleeding the pipes but it sounds like that's what they did yesterday.... Not sure what else you could ask them to do.

Please help! I've been sleeping on the couch for two weeks (I'm 25 weeks pregnant) because ever since the heat was turned on in our building, I can't sleep through the clanging noise in the radiator. The plumber came yesterday and let steam out of the traps but that didn't work. I am at my wits end. Seriously thinking about giving up an amazing apartment over this (I get it through my employer). Does anyone have any tips I could pass along to the building manager?
