@mrbee: Ok great. I backed out of a transaction when someone wanted me to gift as F&F and then said I could "trust them." Personally I'm more of a CYA person.

@BandDmommy: That's easy, our policy is that payments should never ever be done as a Paypal gift! You are never under obligation to send someone a payment as a gift.

The other thing that I think the seller clearly needs to mention is whether they plan to invoice or request you gift. On most pages I am on for FB BST you either invoice or gift as goods and services. If you gift as friends and family the seller has no PayPal protection. I think if someone wants you to gift as friends and family that needs to be clearly stated so you can understand your risk as a buyer.

I think it should be up to the seller what to do but I do think it should be expected to explain it upfront as best as possible. Sometimes folks will say +shipping but I have no idea what that will mean.

I sell and buy often on FB and vastly prefer shipping to be included in the price, both as a buyer and a seller. I like knowing the price up front. Estimating shipping is easy within the continental US.

Honestly, I almost always include shipping in the price I quote. That often means I end up getting less for the item than I'd ideally like (I live in Southern California and have shipped items to the East Coast a lot, which is really far/often expensive shipping) but that's how it goes. I think it's on the seller to clearly list what the shipping situation is when they list.

@mrbee: I'm in the camp that I do actually like to make money off selling my kids stuff. It helps offset buying them new stuff. That's why I charge exact shipping cost and I feel like I price my items cheaper since I don't include the shipping.

Ok I think we have what we need to writeup more detailed shipping guidelines! I'll get to work on that...

@BandDmommy: I do think there are people who care about making money - or at least, covering the cost of shipping! We'll try to keep things simple but flexible, to cover the needs of both groups.

I use the classifieds as a drop off point before donating and as a seller include it in price and I eat the shipping costs. I figure anything above shipping is just extra money I wouldn't have gotten donating! If shipping is added a lot of the times the used prices don't really seem like a deal to buyers! I've been burned once on shipping but paid since I claimed the items!

Hmmm interesting people seem to prefer shipping included. I will have to try that next time. I guess I thought someone who bought more than one item might feel like they are being over charged for items with the shipping built into it.

I don't want to make people feel burned with the shipping charge. I'm usually upfront about the cost before I send an invoice and they are welcome to back out or work with me for a cheaper shipping option (like remove item to get it under 13 ounces).

I work for the post office...

If an item is 2-3 pounds, and you use your own packaging, it'll probably be less to ship than flat rate. Flat rated is usually better for heavier shipments.

@mrbee: I've noticed that sometimes people want better prices for batched shipping, but people don't realize you actually pay more, not less when you have to ship more! Unless you're filling up a larger sized priority sized box, obviously. Bee has been on fire with her sales! ;)

It might be something we have to add to suggestions for a future addition to the Classifieds, but maybe some of the items you mentioned in your first post can actually just be boxes sellers click to it's automatically added to ads?

As far as shipping to and from Canada goes...it gets pricy. It's rarely worth it (IMO) to pay the shipping on anything 'bigger'. For example, I sent three pairs of baby shoes to someone and shipping was almost $20. Most shipping I've come across is around $15.
However, shipping varies greatly depending on where it comes from, so I know I've called dibs on something pending shipping costs.

@BandDmommy: Totally agree - maybe we can do that as part of these guidelines. Like unless otherwise mentioned, here's how shipping works within the US:

First Class - $4 if under 13 ounces
Priority - A range from ___ to ___, depending on weight and distance

I vastly prefer shipping costs included up front. This way everyone knows exactly what they are committing to. If people are bulk buying, then you can work out a discount for multiple items based on actual shipping costs.

I have tried it both ways on this board and that's my conclusion. I have noticed that people tend to be less interested in items including shipping because they may view the price as "inflated." If you own a scale, it's very easy to estimate an accurate price that includes shipping.

I also think that shipping something heavier than first class is pretty much just challenging due to the cost of priority.

I don't like to include shipping on classified posts where I list a lot of items because the shipping can vary depending on how many items are bought. A few items can ship first class which is a set price anywhere in the country. But once over 13 ounces, price will depend on how far away the buyer is from me.

I like to charge actual shipping cost + taking into account PP fees. But I think whether shipping set price or actual shipping should be left up to the seller.

I think my problem when sending items is figuring out what to charge for the shipping cost. I am horrible at judging weight, and I don't own a postal scale (or even a kitchen scale). So I have to find time to get to the post office to weigh the item in whatever box I plan to send it in. I work full-time, and most post offices near me close at 4 or 4:30, which is when I get off work. If I can fit the item in a flat-rate box, I'll just include that shipping price. But that doesn't always work.

@BandDmommy: I've noticed that people on our classifieds usually list the price and the shipping separately. I think that makes sense, because a lot of times people will have multiple items and one buyer can buy multiple items.
