I try to do a bit of tidying as we go - when a room gets too messy I start putting things he isn't using away - and then before we leave a room I try to put everything away. Anything I don't get to gets done after his bedtime so at least we start every day fresh.

I definitely think it's harder when you're home all day. This was making me crazy too so I boxed up half the toys. Not to get rid of (mostly) but to switch out periodically.

We had a serious problem with this, so we got rid of all of the toys that made a mess... except for stuff they can build with (wooden blocks, Magnatiles, Lego). Then we set a firm rule that if they left their toys out, they would lose them. It has worked really well!

I dislike Lego though because even when they are supposedly cleaned up, I am always stepping on the one or two pieces that they missed!!

We clean up most days at the end of the day. Once a week I give it some extra time by myself just to get things extra organized. I agree that limiting the number of toys available is the best way to keep it easier. And yes, it is futile, especially with a 1 year old, but gets easier with time.

@Cherrybee: this is me too, and honestly I think it's a huge contributer to why I don't want to SAH anymore! :( it is so exhausting, but it literally makes me crazy to have a mess. Like, I can't stop thinking about it. I might have some issues...

Take what I say for what it is, because I have a bit of a problem in this area. I clean her room and the living room several times a day. I cant go downstairs without tidying her room first. Then I cant leave the house without tidying the living room. She cant nap on an untidy room and we cant eat dinner with toys strewn everywhere. You're right, its completely pointless and it causes more drama than its worth - I can often be heard shouting "no no no no" as she empties out a toy basket, while I fetch her shoes.......

I have the kids help me clean up at day's end. I also make sure the kids don't have too many toys so it's not an overwhelming clean up job.

We sort of feel the opposite way. We clean more now that she is here because it feels like if we don't stay on top of it, it will multiply and crush us like those people on hoarders. We run around and clean up all the toys every night at bedtime (whoever isn't putting LO to bed cleans). And clutter has to stay put away otherwise she pulls it down and makes an even bigger mess.

Yesterday I went through LO toys and put away the stuff she doesn't play with. She pulled everything back out of the bucket until it was all over the floor. Cleaning with a toddler around is totally a groundhog day experience.

How much effort do you put into cleaning stuff like your LO's room or playroom? I feel like as soon as I've picked up toys, he drags them back out. I'm not annoyed by him wanting to play, but it makes me feel like I shouldn't bother straightening up his room!
