@scg00387: Good point. The car seat had a tag that said machine wash on delicate, but I wouldn't have though of that.

Look at the car seat manual, many say to hand wash bc machine temps remove a fire resistant coating. I wash everything else in the machine even if its new - I'm more concerned about packaging chemicals than germs. Anything else I wash with hot water and soap the first time we use it.

@Cherrybee: Haha-- exactly! What do normal people do?!

I'll say this-- don't douse toys that have a battery (like buttons that play music) or they will break. Oops. And be careful with anything that water could get in-- my sister gave me one that has little balls inside of a plastic casing and I got water droplets inside so I'm afraid it will grow mold eventually. I'm glad I made the mistakes on old hand me downs.

Oh no, I hadn't even thought of washing the car seat cover. Our car seat is new - but you have to wash new clothes..... what do normal people do???!! And do you wash new toys? Such a good question - I have no idea!! Agh!

I totally got some toys wetter than they were meant to and broke a music toy. Oops. Car seat cover is in the wash though.

Anything cloth I washed and toys I wiped down or ran through dishwasher depending on the complexity of the toy.

@Foodnerd81: I just wiped stuff down, like you did. I figure a few germs aren't necessarily a bad thing.

I would take the covers on the carseat and such and wash them though, because newborn skin is really sensitive.

If you're nervous, most plastic toys can be run through the dishwasher, which will sanitize them.

How do you clean toys and such? Hard plastic, stuffed animals, etc? Did you wash all the new stuff you receive or buy?

I have received some hand me down infant toys from my sister, so it's not like they are from some sketchy warehouse, but they were stored in a storage unit and her attic. I wiped everything with alcohol wipes then rinsed with hot water or wiped with a hot damp washcloth. Is that good enough for a teeny infant? I'll be less nervous with older kid stuff I assume.

What about soft things? Stuffed animals-- did you wash even new stuff stuffed animals? Or ones that you have had around for a while?

Finally-- gear like the stroller muff things, or the infant car seat. My sister gave me her car seat (not expired, never in an accident). Again, it's been stored for a year or so, so should I take off the cloth part and wash that? Just sponge it off? It looks clean to the naked eye.

I'm trying to figure out where the line is between *paranoid germaphobe first time mom* and *ew you didn't wash that?* is. My shower is in 2 weeks so I'm trying to get all the stuff I already have sorted before adding everything new to the mix!
