I do not use a steam mop on our hardwoods, just our kitchen (linoleum). I use a Bona spray mop and solution, but the nice thing about it is that you refill the thing with whatever you want. We use Ava Anderson Non Toxic spray for counters but I've also used it in the floor mop before.

I'll second a PP. Most of the time you are not supposed to use a steam mop on hardwood floors.

I have very old wood floors, and don't like to use water unless it's necessary. I have a wool dust mop that is amazing for every day use. We vacuum often. Maybe once a month I mop with water and vinegar, but try not to get the floors very wet.

@jlm22: we have had two sharks and they both crapped out on us after the one year mark. I'm wishing for the Bissell ^ to go on sale. And also check with the manufacturer of your hardwood that using a steam mop won't void your warranty.

We vacuum often then use a vinegar + water solution to spray and wipe with a microfiber sweeper thingie. After a particularly dirty day like a party I would get down on my hands and knees and scrub with hot water and just a touch of cleaner.

@jlm22: vinegar and water in a spray bottle - clean and dry with a soft mop. You do not want to get a lot on water on wood floors so just mist the floors with the spray bottle as you go.

I try hard to limit the amount of chemicals I use when I clean, but have yet to find a way to clean my wood floors without them. Now that I'm on the floor all of the time and have a crawler I'm beginning to see that I have to clean my floors a lot more than I used to. Even though dust balls are very fun to play with, does anyone have a non toxic way to clean wood floors?
