One of my best friends in high school was born with Van der Woude syndrome. His son was born with the same thing and just recently had his first surgery...and is thriving!

Hubby's cousin does. I don't know much details about it, but I know they had surgery when she was little. It was still very noticeable when she was younger, but it's less noticeable now. She's 16.

Yes. I work with lots of babies and toddlers with cleft lip and palate. Usually everything goes fairly smoothly unless there is an underlying chromosomal abnormality.

I don't personally, but, I'm considered "high risk" because I have a genetic condition that causes cleft palates (though I don't have one). For us, they will just take a later ultrasound to see if everything looks normal, and be prepared at the hospital after DS's birth, just in case.

From my research, it appears (depending where you live), to be pretty treatable, though I know there are extreme cases that are more difficult to deal with.

Sorry I couldn't be more help!

Yes, our friend's daughter was born with a cleft palate and she had her first surgery at 3 months. I don't remember when she had the second surgery...maybe 7 months? She is now 16 months and you can't really tell she had a cleft!

I know feeding was tough. She couldn't latch so her mom pumped exclusively and fed her LO with special bottles.

Does anyone know anyone whose baby was born with a cleft lip and palate? Just looking for experiences that you may have heard of.
