My son has been doing this since before he could walk (13mo?) we just don't leave him awake in the crib unattended. It hasn't been an issue yet luckily! I think he's too young for a toddler bed (18mo now).

@Applesandbananas: that's a good idea to gate him in his room. I would be afraid he would climb the stair gate or something - not that he is unattended! If he made it out of his room I would hear and be wide awake immediately!

@Foodnerd81: he hasn't tried to climb (ever) there was just the 1 flipping incident so far. I've been watching like a hawk when he wakes up to see what he tries... So far it looks like a fluke incident! I still plan to drop the mattress and put him in the cage style at some point soon.

LO was in a floor bed super early and we put a gate over his door so he couldn't leave his room. He doesn't even like to leave his bed, but we didn't want to risk him leaving his room! It worked well!

I would definitely move a child who is climbing out of their crib, they could really hurt themselves. When my daughter did it we moved her to a floor mattress in an otherwise completely empty room. Everyone may not have the space for it, but it was fantastic. She was 15 months and transitioned to a room with some furniture/ distractions when she was 23 months.

Gaahhh that's my worst nightmare! I have a bad sleeping, climbing wild man that's a similar age. If that happened I would take my chances and hope he didn't do it again. If so, I guess no other choice than a toddler bed?

@psw27: It's exactly like a cage. I have several friends who have done it. One had the mattress thickness problem and she put it on top of folded blankets. The only difficult part I think will be getting him in the crib without a parachute (ha!).

These homies made a wooden platform for a crib that looks similar to your's to lower the mattress even further - I don't know how handy you or DH are.

http://growinguptriplets.com/2013/08/05/how-to-keep-baby-from-climbing-out-of-a-crib/

It seems like depending on the kind of gap you'd have between the floor and the crib, you could just stack pieces of lumber underneath the crib mattress. If its a really small gap, I might try wrapping the gap with the breathable mesh bumpers.

@LBee: It's definitely worth a try! I"m a little worried that the matress isn't thick enough to fill the entire gap between the floor and the bottom rail -- totally going to try it though! It kind of seems like a cage - ha!
