One more suggestion to add -- try not to stress about it too much. I found that every time I stressed out over the clogged duct still being there, I wouldn't make much progress getting rid of it. Once I just let go and stopped over thinking, milk would start to flow again and no more clogged duct.

@allison: Ah...never knew about this! I didn't try it. LO is 9.5 months old now and got his last drop of breast milk at 4.5 months from the last of my freezer stash. I'll keep it in mind for #2 though!

Maybe, if it becomes a recurring thing, you can try lecithin? http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/lecithin/

@2PeasinaPod: did you try it?

I agree that if it's too engorged, pumping was the only thing that helped me. I would just keep pumping that boob every chance I got when I wasn't BFing LO.

I'm sorry...it's so painful and it happened to me all the time which contributed to me giving up BFing and moving to exclusively pumping after 3-4 weeks :sad:

@Mrsbells: If it's too engorged for LO to latch, like she said, pumping is the best option.

Oh! You should also check your nipple for a milk bleb.

@rahlyrah: The best thing you can do is not pump that side, just keep nursing on that side every feeding and pump the other side ( that doesnt have the clogged duct) because keeping the breast as empty as possible is the best medicine for that and nursing does a better job of that than pumping. Goodluck!

Ugh, I just got rid of a clogged duct myself! They're so painful and irritating. Especially when you're just starting out breastfeeding! In addition to the massaging and pumping, hot showers, and offering that side first every time, I used a rice sock, warmed in the microwave, as a hot compress. I would heat it up and stick it in my bra/tank, leave it there until it cooled down, then immediately nurse LO on that side.

Try changing positions as much as possible, too. Football hold, cradle hold, dangle-feed, etc.

Good luck!

Thanks ladies! How many times a day would you hot compress/massage? I only pump a few times a day and I am not coordinated enough to hot compress when LO is eating (without dripping all over him). He is only 13 days old so I still don't quite have the BFing thing down yet!

I would do the same as @Weagle...while pumping, I would have the heating pad right on that area while massaging it all at the same time. Hurt like heck...but just kept at it at every pumping session and it finally released.

The longest I had one was a couple of days. I would press in on the knot with my knuckle as hard as possible while nursing/pumping. It hurt like crap, but worked.

Sorry! I know how much they suck. Offer that breast each time first. Someone told me to try to dangle feed when I got my first one. R has reflux so it wouldn't work for me. I usually can it gone within a couple days of hot compress and massaging.

Any advice on how to heal a clogged duct? It is farther back (closer to my armpit) and pretty painful. This morning I could barely lift up my arm. It was so engorged that LO couldn't even latch. I hot compressed/massaged it this morning and manually expressed in the shower. I tried to pump, but barely produced anything.

The above actions helped, but the side of my breast is still pretty hard and painful to touch. I was able to get LO to nurse off of it last feeding, thankfully, using the football hold.

Given the fact that it is still hard and tender, I am assuming it is still clogged. Any tips on how to unclog it? How long does it usually take? I am paranoid that I am going to get mastitis so I am obsessing over it right now!
