I mostly pumped due to latching issues. I used to take a hot shower or apply hot washcloths. Lots of massaging. I even used an electric tooth brush. Massage as you pump. Sometimes I'd latch the babysince even with his issues, he was able to break up the plug. Good luck. I remember plugged ducts stressing me out so much! ❤️

I got these a lot until I started on lecithin. So definitely do that!
But until then, I used to dangle my boob in a warm bowl of water and massage the sore spot. It really is torture, I’m sorry you’re going through it. But that was Best for me.
Also massaging spot Best you can while pumping. Depending on where it is this might not be possible.
I also EP’d (95% of the time) and I think that has a lot to do with it since it just doesn’t have the suction a baby has. For whatever reason a manual pump also seemed to work better for me sometimes.

For me it was always just push really hard, massage and you'll know when it releases. Make sure you are pushing everywhere. :(

Also if u are not squeamish, have your husband suck on it as hard as he can after showering and exfoliating. Sometimes it's just the fastest way to push through it.

I had a really really painful clogged duct once- couldn't even raise my arm it hurt so bad. the only thing that helped was this random technique I found online. Lay your baby on its backing the ground, get on your hands and knees above your baby and nurse that way. Its almost like you're nursing upside down. The gravity, I guess, really helps. It sounds weird but it got all these amazing "reviews" online, and it actually worked for me too.

@annem1990: I second the electric toothbrush. That plus repeated hot showers with squeezing like it was my job worked for me. It usually took 3 or 4 showers to get serious enough about it because it does hurt like hell. I just focused on working through the pain to avoid getting knocked on my ass from mastitis.

Once the milk is released you might feel bruised but you shouldn’t feel engorged or have hard spots.

I took phytolacca (you can buy it at Sprouts if you have one nearby) and pumped or nursed every hour. Press a warm towel on the clogged duct before and try to massage it (hard!) toward your nipple while pumping/nursing.

You definitely want to keep pumping otherwise it'll mess up your supply. You should do hot towel compress massages on your boob before pumping and afterwards, just keep massaging inwards towards the nipple. You should use an electric toothbrush on any lumps to help work it out. You should also take sunflower lecithin, it will help prevent clogged ducts. I take it daily because I used to get so many clogged ducts, it was awful!

Hugs to you, I EP-ed for a while and got these quite frequently, they are the worst!

What helped me was to sit in a bath and put a hot washcloth on my boob and nipple for a while, and then try to squeeze the nipple in different ways to see if I could get it to come out. I had to resort to the pin a few times and mine always happened in the same one spot, so once you figure it out it might be easier to clear next time. It will be probably be sore for a while but you should feel immediate relief from the more intense pain once you get the milk to flow there again! Good luck!

Is there something on your nipple when u try to hand express that looks like a pimple? Try exfoliating your nips and hand express. If that doesn't do it you may need to get a clean needle and open the skin covering the duct. Google "bleb" or milk blister.

I'm 5 weeks postpartum me EPing. LO has a hard time latching.
I think I've developed a clogged duct in the past few hours. The entire top of my breast is really painful. No milk blister. I can't feel a specific lump. Just like one horrible bruise. All day my supply on that side has decreased to about half of normal.
I pump every 3-4 hours normally. Should I be pumping that side more? Less to stall production? I sat in the shower for 45mins and massaged/hand expressed and cried from the pain.

How do I know when it's clear? Will it immediately feel better? Or will it still be sore for a couple days?
