It's gone both ways for me. I would try really hard to work out any plug or clumps. Drink so much water and rest in hopes that your body can clear it before you get a fever. The meds were no fun for be but did do the trick.

I ended up with a borderline fever of 99.8. I was worried about the soreness from my armpit going down into my breast and the red spots so I went to the clinic. It felt like it was getting worse. Doctor said he could feel the lump and that it was mastitis. He gave me antibiotics and said he thinks we caught it early. The antibiotics are already kicking in bc I’m not as sore and the red spots are pretty much gone.
Thank you all!!

@MsBAM: Ditto what the others have said. Mastitis wrecks you with a fever. Would this be your first clogged duct?

How are you feeling today?

The hallmark of mastitis is a high temperature, usually above 102. It could be just a clog - try a heating pad followed by nursing on all fours, to let gravity help get it out, if your LO will tolerate it.

I haven't had full blown mastitis but I would treat at home unless/until you have a fever or other symptoms. Have you gotten your cycle back yet? I get weird breast pains around ovulation and PMS time while nursing.

Hi all,

I’m 10m into nursing and last night I noticed some arm pit pain/soreness. It’s not excruciating but I know something is going on. This morning I still feel it and I have a few small red blotches on my breast. I dont have a fever or feel like I have the flu. Can I try to treat at home with warm/cold compress or should I be going to the clinic?

Thank you
