I know how you feel! I had mastitis and it was so painful! The flu like symptoms just killed me. Get the antibiotics asap and you should feel better in a day or two... and bed rest! do not get out of your bed for anything. all you should be doing is eat and rest. I hope you feel better soon!

I had recurring mastitis, and I too recommend antibiotics ASAP!

The ladies above have given you great advice, and I have one more thing to add: please be careful of thrush when you are being treated by antibiotics for mastitis. Because thrush thrives where there is NO bacteria, you become a prime candidate for it when you are on antibiotics. And as much as mastitis sucks, thrush on your boobs sucks even more....it literally feels like razor blades ripping through your breasts for HOURS after each feeding/pumping session (google "what does thrush feel like" if you don't believe me)! I had recurring bouts of mastitis, then thrush, then mastitis, then thrush over and over again and that's the reason I decided to stop breastfeeding at 3 months. So while on the antibiotics, please try to get as much rest as possible, keep the boob area clean, and reduce your intake of sugar.

Hope you feel better soon once you take the antibiotics. I am prone to having clogged ducts, and it made me miserable each time I had a clog. Sometimes it would take just a few hours to get rid of, and then there were times it would take a few days. When I had mastitis I had to go to the ER to get my prescription since it was a weekend. It still took me almost a week to fully recover.

I do want to thank you for your posts about your experience with clogged ducts with Charlie on your xanga. I read those posts while feeding my LO in the middle of the night and found it so useful. By the time I had my first clog, I went back to read over your tips. It was so helpful during such a painful first experience.

thanks! I just called my doctor and she's calling in a prescription. i don't have the energy to make it all the way to her office... thank goodness! with charlie i was able to clear the clogged ducts with nursing. but since olive isn't really nursing right now, i don't think the pump is efficient enough.

i think the exhaustion just took its toll. i have been absolutely miserable the past 24 hours wavering between freezing cold, then sweating like a pig when the ibuprofen kicks in, migraines + exhaustion. man it's hard being a mom!

Antibiotics!!!!!! I was in so much pain, I wanted to go to the ER but the sensible hubs talked me out of it and I went to a walk-in clinic instead. I suffered for 2 weeks before seeking treatment because I thought it was normal...Pshh, how can pain-until-sobbing be normal???? And, like sandsandmore said, within hours of taking the first pill, I felt better.

the people I've spoken with who got mastitis (almost every other nursing mom I've talked to about nursing!) mentioned how bad it can get if you don't treat it right away... just go to the doc asap and get on those antibiotics, and pump and dump. Good luck :( mastitis was my biggest fear. I thankfully never got it, but everyone I talked to played it down because it's so common and not a big deal once it's treated.

Get the antibiotics asap!!! I went to the ER because I was so miserable (Granted it was a Sunday morning and I was already at the hospital with my babies in the NICU and there was no wait in the ER). You'll feel better within hours once you get the meds.

I sometimes still struggle with clogged ducts -- usually caused if a wear an underwire bra for too long or too tight of a nursing top. I've had to pop lots of blebs (milk blisters) to get things moving again. Oh, but the pure relief of an unblocked milk flow.

I think I have mastitis, hence the blog silence. With Charlie I had clogged ducts a couple of times, but I was able to treat them myself. This is definitely the worst I've had it. For the past 24 hours, I've been so feverish that I've been sleeping with my puffy jacket on, three blankets and a heating pad. I've slept for 24 hours straight waking up only to pump.

Evidently mastitis can become really serious, so I may have to go to the doctor today for some antibiotics. Have you ever had mastitis? How did you treat it?
