Massage (when nursing and not nursing - and continue through the pain), heat pack, hot showers, nurse mainly on that side (pump the other). I cant stress to continue through the pain cuz it will pass.

I don't know if I'm the only one but I get clogged ducts when I eat fatty foods (like salami and pepperoni - I love having a meat and cheese plate as a snack)...I did some google searching and it says it is common...so now I really limit my intake of those foods :(

What i read online and ended up working for me was to massage the hard area and hand express that boob...and I had to inspect the nipple in a well lit room (bathroom) and I could see a little white clump (super tiny but the rest of the nipple is leaking milk and one area close to the clogged/hard area of the boob is not)...if you can "pick" that white clump off of the nipple then milk will start shooting out like crazy...but then it migh stop bc another white clump has clogged it so you have to get it off again and milk will start shooting out like crazy again...and repeat until milk is just coming out (not spraying like crazy) when you hand express and the hard area on your breast is gone. This is what worked for me...kind of a pain but it works immediately. I usually do it at the end of the day after LO is down for the night and the day of feeding didn't work. It may also help to do it in the shower.

Thanks girls! I'll keep at it so. It's not painful or anything, just annoying really.

You may want to trying taking lecithin supplements. I was very clog-prone, and my lactation consultant suggested it, and it has definitely helped me. It won't get rid of an existing plug, but it may help decrease the chances of getting future clogs. Here's a bit about it on kellymom: http://kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/lecithin/

I had a clogged duct and it was so painful! I pumped, breastfed, pumped, and breastfed some more, and it went away! My doctor said to always start the baby on the side that the clogged duct is on, because the beginning is when their suction is the strongest.

I also slept on a heating pad and used wet hot compresses on my breast. It went away in two days!

Put heat on it as much as you can. I used a sock full of rice in the microwave. Then massage as you nurse. Worked for me every time!

Keep nursing your baby on that breast only until its resolved and pump the other side for now. Babies are great at being able to completely empty the breast, thats the advice I was given when I had a clogged duct and it worked like a charm.

I look for a clump of dried milk on the nipple itself... if I can pick it out and that's the culprit, that's usually easiest unclog.

Otherwise I'd soak the inside of a diaper in HOT water and press it against the clogged area. That plus massage usually helped. Better than having to get in the shower every time! The diaper stays HOT long and it doesn't get you all wet like a towel does because the diaper soaks up all the water and holds it.

I've tried massaging them down while in the shower, one v persistent lump keeps reappearing every time I'm full of milk. What else works?
