@Sams Mom: It is very frustrating! Even knowing I would have fertility issues, trying to find the right protocol sucked.

@KT326: I haven't been monitored more than a monthly check and CD21 blood draws if I'm questioning ovulation for any reason. But this next month we've talked about mid cycle ultrasounds too.

It's just so frustrating when you know the mechanics of how to get pregnant, but you can't make it work.

My OB wouldn't do any Clomid cycles and referred me straight to a RE. She would do 6 cycles before insisting that you move on to something else and would switch from Clomid to femera once your lining dipped below 8mm.

@MrsMom: The big 3-0 is closing in on me, but I know that's not old as far as pregnancy goes by any means... I was 26 when I got pregnant with my son, so I wasn't super young for my first baby, but then again I wasn't old by any means.

All three of my RE's would only do 6 cycles max of Clomid or Femara before changing the protocol. I did 4 cycles with one doctor and when I switched practices they wanted to change the protocol because it obviously wasn't working (I didn't respond at all to oral meds).

The problem with Clomid is that it can thin your lining. If you are taking it without being monitored and your lining is thin, there is no chance of it working because the egg has no where to implant even if it gets fertilized. This is a reason I always recommend people see an RE because they will monitor, most OB's just don't have the background or even the capacity to do monitoring.

@Sams Mom: I should say that they would only do 3 cycles of JUST clomid/femara. From there, we would have to change the protocol in some way (IUI, trigger, etc.) I ended up getting pregnant on my third cycle of femara right before IUI. The success rate with IUI vs TI doesn't seem that significant, but time and time again, I see people who get pregnant from IUI after trying for a long time.

I think age might have a lot to do with it as well. Like the older you are they don't want to waste as much time if you might need further help. Both times I was on it my Dr. only allowed 6 cycles at a time then I would have to look at other options or take a break for a while.

@FaithFertility: @crazydoglady: Did you do IUI? Is the percentages that much higher than timed intercourse?

I just have so many questions because I'm closing in on my last few cycles of Clomid before I regroup and decide on what we can/should do.

I did 6 medicated cycles with my RE - 3 IUI and 3 monitoring. In my case, after 6 they strongly suggested moving to IVF.

I have noticed that the # of cycles on Clomid (or femera) that a doctor allows seems to vary a lot. So I'm just curious how many cycles your doctor would have allowed and how many it took if you did get pregnant.

My doctor will allow 6 before referring me to a clinic for IUI or potentially IVF. Where as I have a friend that goes to a doctor within my practice, but hers has had her on 10 cycles in a row before she took a break.
