@katsupgirl: So funny...I literally just picked up the bed from IKEA on lunch today. Planning to DIY it up this weekend...I'll share pictures.

As for the closet, I missed the 25% off both Elfa and Installation so I decided to wait until they run that promo again. Then I am going to do both girls closets from TCS. I have both closets pre-designed and saved...I can literally just call up and pull the trigger. She did say that during their big sales installation can be 2-4 weeks out (since it is a service employed only by them, not sub'd out) but thats ok with me. It will cost roughly $1700 installed for both closets.

@birdofafeather: Thats a good option to look at too. Glad you've been pleased with your choices long term...

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Thanks for confirming my thoughts...

@gingerbebe: Thanks for the feedback. I'm really really into the Kura right now. I was just oogling some hacks and I LOVE it. DD currently loves hanging out in this lil "cubby" space at school - so I think she could really like this option. Plus - it would give us an opportunity to test out the bunk bed concept (DD2 could sleep under, while DD1 sleeps over) before splurging on a bigger set. Thanks!!!

we used rubbermaid configurations for our girls rooms because we completely rebuilt their closets when we bought our house and couldn't spend $1000+ on stuff from TCS (two large reach in closets). i've been pretty happy with them and since our needs have been changing as our family grows, i'm glad i didn't splurge on TCS at that time.

http://www.rubbermaid.com/en-US/shop-products/configurations%C2%AE-customizable-closet (we bought the titanium set from amazon and it was so inexpensive and very easy to set up!)

we then built out a simple closet for DH and i using the elfa system and we're happy with that too! but our needs were basic and won't change.

all that being said, both options have really utilized the space and kept us from having to buy more little do dads and book shelves to store more and it looks good (when it's organized!)

If we had stayed in our old house LO’s room would have been 10 x 11 and my plan was to install a reach in Elfa system (TCS wasn’t out yet). The goal for his room has always been to have space to play. Dresser space definitely takes up real estate.

@Mrs D: There are a billion Ikea hacks on the Kura so yeah I'm sure you can paint it. I think you just need to sand it to buff out the clear coat, or perhaps you can just paint a primer right over it.

We like the Kura a lot. We've rearranged it a few times now through the big boy bed transition. He went from a floor bed in a Privacy Pop tent, so we needed to give him a cave-like bed. We did the bunk on top configuration with a standard mattress on top and then the thinnest mattress Ikea sells on the bottom and then put the house tent over the frame. DS1 slept on the bottom in his little house cave but climbed to the top to play on the top bunk.

Recently, we started having some bedtime behavior issues, so to switch things up, we flipped the bed upside down so that the bunk is on the bottom (so the platform bed configuration). We threw the house tent over the top like a canopy, so now the bed feels bigger and more spacious than it did when he slept under the bunk, but still enclosed. (My kid just sleeps better in an enclosed space, he's weird).

Long story short, we love it!

@Mrs. High Heels: Yes! They just had one...thats when I got the prices. I am trying to make up my mind now so the next time they go on sale I can just pull the trigger!

@gingerbebe: My kids both have so many darn clothes that I tried to do the hanging organizers, and it didnt work. Then I expanded to an organizer and some cube storage...DD decided she wants to pick her clothes out each morning...I resisted at first but it lead to many battles. She actually has gotten good at just getting herself dressed in the morning...so I'm done fighting over pre-planning her outfits like I do!

Side note: How do you like the Kura? I have been eyeing it for DD. She sometimes says she wants a bunk bed...but sometimes says she is scared of them. I have had my eye on this because its like a nice middle ground and is "reversible". Do you think I could paint it white easily?

My son's room is modestly sized and he has about 7 feet of closet space in it with only a single rod at adult height and a shelf above that. It is open from floor to ceiling and it is currently "closed" with curtain panels in front of it, hung from the ceiling.

I hemmed and hawed about doing a closet system, but ultimately I decided against it because right now he doesn't have any clothes that he has to hang. He has youth scaled furniture composed of a 3 drawer and a 3 drawer with a side door piece that contain his clothes. Then in the closet, is a hanging cubby organizer where I put his school uniforms, folded, one for each day. The rest of the closet hanging space is actually my overflow, so for now, we're not doing a closet system because the furniture and the hanging cubby is sufficient for the kind of clothes he has. We will revisit if we ever get to the point where he's wearing dress shirts and slacks...which is what I think hanging storage is best to keep the clothes as wrinkle free as possible. I hang most of my own clothes, I fold very little, but I think that's the result of dress pants and dresses versus polo shirts and joggers!

We also have a playroom that has the big lego table and bulky toys, so I didn't really need to free up floor space. I think that also impacted my decision.

We bought the hanging canvas storage sets from Land of Nod with the canvas drawers that go inside them for my boys. Half their closet has the hanging storage and half is for clothes that need to be hung on hangers.

https://www.crateandbarrel.com/canvas-hanging-organizer/f83237

Right now, the boys each have 1 hanging storage that is open with no drawers. They have 6 slots, so I set out a pair of PJs and an outfit into each slot (2 sets in the last slot for the weekend) on Sunday nights and whichever parent is getting them dressed or changed after bath can just grab the clothes. DS1 can also choose to mix and match whatever is in the open storage if he doesn't feel like wearing a particular shirt on a given day or whatever. Then there is a second hanging storage unit with drawers right next to it, and it holds the rest of their current size t-shirts, pants/shorts, underwear, socks, etc. Then we hang special occasion clothes, jackets and sweaters, costumes, and collared shirts.

Right now, between that and some bins on the shelf above for off-season clothes and shoes in the next size up, that's plenty. We do have a 4-cube storage unit from Ikea that I can easily slip into the closet on the side with the clothing on hangers if needed, but so far I don't have to. Perhaps I just don't have a lot of clothes for my kids, LOL.

Neither kid has a dresser in their room and it frees up a lot more floor space for sure. DS1 just has his bed (Ikea Kura) and a sling-style front-facing bookcase against one wall in his room and DS2 has the 4-unit Ikea storage cube next to his crib right now just to hold the humidifier and Dohm on top. Otherwise they have stuffed animals in their beds and a few low-stimulation toys that we can quickly stow in a bin in the closet and that's it!

My perspective may be a little skewed since my kids closets were already done when we moved into the house, so I didn’t have to pay all at once to do them… But I adore their walk in closets with built-in’s. We have a mixture of high and low bars, some spaces for lawn things to hang when they get older, wiremesh drawers, and closed drawers. I’m considering buying more closed drawers for things like underwear and socks that would fall through the wire drawers; right now I have plastic sterilite drawers to hold those things. Currently my daughters don’t even have dressers in the rooms, which is such a huge space saver. I am out now but will post some pictures when I get home.

So - DD1 is at the point of moving from her toddler bed to a big girl bed, and DD2 is ready to move from the crib/changing table set up to a toddler set up.

I've been looking in to furniture (they both just have cubby type storage right now) and other options. I am strongly debating getting their closets professionally done...for several reasons:

1) Cost isnt that much more (I can do their closets from Container Store for about $700 DIY or $900 installed)...dressers would probably be $500 each anyways.
2) Safety...I dont have to worry about them tipping over
3) Space...their rooms arent small but they also arent huge. So skipping out on that piece of furniture leaves room for more play!

Wondering if other have made this call and how you feel about it after the fact?

The items I priced at the container store were just white pieces, but some of the upgraded elements. I choose TCS because I like that they will install it and that the components are variable - so they can grow with the girls. Also - I just love the quality of their Elfa stuff, has never disappointed me before.
