Just wanted to update and say that switching to our cloth stash has been awesome! We still use overnight disposables for bedtime, and we take disposables if we're out of town, but overall it's been almost seamless.
LO didn't care about the new bulk, she naps just as well wearing them, and I am STILL using our disposable stash from before I made this post (and we've gone out of town for the weekend three times). It's been really easy to integrate the washing into our routine and her daycare nanny hasn't had any problems. Thanks for the encouragement to just go for it :)

I acquired a stash with #1 and used it almost exclusively after a couple weeks. With #2, I honestly don’t remember. I know I used cloth, but not how often. Now with #3, we use cloth at home and disposables at night or if we will be out awhile. I feel like the more use cloth diapers get, the better I’m doing for the environment, particularly since I already have them. So I’m fairly committed. I did get a ton of diapers for my shower do #3, so I didn’t start using them until 2 months (and now using the stash for night times and trips).

Number one was in cloth most of the time. Number two we went back and forth for various reasons, but I always felt guilty about the money wasted on disposables. Plus cloth is so cute.

In my house, I had to put the disposables in a closet to only get out at night, otherwise my husband would automatically use those. So I guess I'm saying to take some action toward making the cloth your norm?

Just commiseration from me. I'm in the same boat. I have a beautiful stash from my first and even bought a couple new ones. We clothed for 2 weeks when he started to fit and then went on vacation and bought hello bello disposables, they're cute and soft and so dang easy. My stash is still in the closet. I feel like I should use them but I just ordered another box of hello Bello instead 🤷

We might go back once he's older and doesn't use so many diapers in a day. And honestly I found ebf poop worse because we have an he washer and I had to spray them off anyway

We cloth diapered starting at 3 months. We moved when DD was 8 months (cross country in temporary housing) so we did disposables for 4 months. We put her back in them when she was 12 months. And we were so happy to put her back in! They are way cuter, have had NO BLOWOUTS, and the amount of money saved is amazing.
We've been back in cloth for 18 months, and are just on the edge of potty training... and I'm already missing it!
So that my little anecdote about putting your child in cloth at a little later age.

I think you may be psycing yourself out about it. Cloth is a bit more work, but once it is part of your laundry cycle it really isn't a chore. Start slowly, maybe decide to cloth during the day on the weekends. Once you are back into the swing, it will be easy to eventually be wholly cloth again.

And if you try and don't like it... who cares!

We had to put DD in disposables for a period of time when she was about 19 months old due to augmentin poop (ew). I thought she would fight being back in cloth but she didn’t care.

I'd start using some cloth diapers and see how you feel about it. I had plans to only use cloth diapers for our daughter, but we bought the one size, not the newborn ones, so we had to wait for her to grow into them while using newborn disposables.

They fit her better now, but are still so bulky and dont fit well under a lot of her clothes. We basically only use cloth diapers when we are hanging around the house, but when we go out and for overnight we stick with disposables. I still like using them around the house though as I can tell it makes a difference with how many disposables we need to order every month.

@merriment: Very true. We always used overnight disposables for our first and we'll keep that for the second if we start with cloth.

@brownepiano: Good point! Babies are resiliant and adaptable and she may not even really notice or care.

I have a friend who started when her kid was older, like 1. I can't stand the disposable culture so I'd just start now and keep your disposables for back up. As long as you can stay on top of the wash it's not hard at all.

Cloth diapering doesn't need to be all or nothing!
We used paper at night and when we were going out for the day. But if we were just hanging around the house or staying really local we would use cloth.

So I have a great stash of cloth diapers and gear, mostly saved from my first DD1 and some given to us by generous neighbors who are done having kids. I 100% thought we would cloth diaper our newest LO since we had everything and it went fine last time.

But, then we just didn't for whatever reason. I chalk it up to a combination of waiting for DD2 to grow into them, then wanting to use up our disposable stash, and now just being lazy about it. There is also a part of me that worries DD2 will not be used to them or be uncomfortable with the bulk.

So, I'm now at the point where I feel like we either need to double-down and actually do cloth diapers OR sell our stash and the related accessories we have for it. DD2 is 8 months old and I WOH full time while DH works part-time for now but may be returning to a full-time WOH position within the next couple weeks.

What would you do? (Poll for funsies)
