Wow you guys have so many!! I have 20 fuzzibunz OS, 1 BG, 1 Lotus Bumz and 2 grovia AIO. And I o diaper laundry every other day.

We also have a full grovia hybrid system, six shells and 16 inserts, we ended up having to use then his first month because his nb skin was so sensitive, the micro fleece caused rashes. So we had to use organic cotton. Now he's ok and tolerates the fleece just fine.

But I could do with only one system and I think 24 is enough.

Between the two systems we spent about $400 for all of them, but I shopped around and got lots of great deals.

As for gear, I hot a $20 stainless steel trash can from target that I love as my diaper pail. You can clamp in liners and there is a foot pedal so you don't have to lift the lid.

We have two pail liners, one white kissaluvs and one owl print (on amazon. Not sure the brand).

We have about five wet bags from planet wise.

One diaper sprayer

About fifty cloth wipes

And one roll of liners which I never use'

Wow-- we're on the low end. (But we use disposables overnight, so there's that.) We use G-diapers, mostly with the cloth inserts because they have fewer leaks for us than the flushable inserts. To avoid leaks with the g-diapers, we double stuff. So for us, that meant we used 6 small g-pants and 24 small cloth inserts. Now that we're in the mediums, we have 6 medium g-pants and 12 medium/large inserts. (We double stuff a medium on top of a small cloth insert now. Works great, less bulk.) I wash the inserts every other day or every 3rd day, and give the pants a quick wash by hand in the bathroom sink if they need it before laundry day.

I have pondered over this question so many times and decided to buy 24, I actually plan to buy my stash tomorrow! I will be b uying 24 Freetime all in one, one size diapers by bum genius. Once the baby starts day care we will only use the cloth diapers in the evenings and weekends and I'm hoping 24 will be enough.

These are pretty high numbers! We are just starting to CD at 6 months so not sure about newborn numbers.

She gets 5 diapers at daycare (10 hours) and 3 diapers at home (morning, evening and overnight). So for us we need 8 diapers a day.

I am hoping to have a stash of 20 just to be safe.

Wow, we have managed to do with a lot less. We use prefolds and covers, and we have 18 prefolds in the smaller size. We were doing laundry every day and occasionally twice a day (8-9 loads a week maybe) for the first month or so I'd say. Now we do a load about every other day. He is 3 months old. Our washer makes it easy for us so washing them daily never felt like a big deal. We have about 5 covers that we go through pretty quickly and have had a couple times where we ran out of covers, I guess we are just not experts at putting the diapers on. :)

We're doing a cloth diaper rental for when she's a newborn, and that will include 20 fitted diapers plus I think 6 covers. Once she grows into the diapers that we purchased we'll be using one-size pocket diapers. My strategy was to buy 24 for now of a combination of BumGenius and Fuzzibunz. Once we figure out which brand we like better I'll up my stash to at least 30 (maybe more depending on how many we go through) so that we can easily go 2-3 days between washes.

I use gdiapers. I bought 36 small gcloths and had 10 little gpants these fit her until she was 14 pounds I mostly used the flushable gfills for the first 3 months. Now she is in size medium gpants and I have 14 of them and 36 gcloths. The size mediums should last her until she is potty trained - I think until 28-30 pounds is the limit...but I have a big healthy girl so who she may be one of the few babies that end up in size large gdiapers :)

@Running Elley: I'm assuming you are planning on one size FB since you are using the BG 4.0s. If that is the case then I would say the majority of the time you can get away with 24 doing laundry every 2 days. During the newborn phase I did a cloth diaper rental and did diaper laundry every day and used around 15 diapers in every 24 hour period so the newborn phase you should plan on either having more diapers or doing wash more frequently than every two days. I personally prefer around 35-40 one size diapers. That number is based on the fact that one size diapers are used a lot longer than sized diapers so they go through more washes and wear and tear over time so the elastic, PUL, inserts, and fleece get put through a lot more. Because of that, I like to have more diapers in my rotation, not because I need them, but because it allows the diapers to be used a little less frequently and wear a little longer. I do laundry three times a week: Monday night, Wednesday night, and Saturday morning.

Here's my cut and dry answer: for newborn phase 4 dozen, until 6 months 3 dozen, afterward 2 dozen. This is based on doing laundry every third day and not worrying about running out. I knew that I needed cloth to be easy and that means not worrying about daily laundry when you have a new baby. Also, we use a mix of AIO and prefolds to keep the cost down.

We are doing thirsties snap wraps with diaper service prefolds. For our situation, the clerk at the cloth diaper store recommended 8 wraps per baby per size (based on laundry every 2ish days). She recommended a 1.5 stash for twins, but we're planning on a double stash of wraps for convenience. For the prefolds, the diaper service recommends 70 prefolds per week (10 per day) per baby as their starting average, but that will decrease with time.

That said, we're planning to use Earth's Best disposables at first since I don't want to splurge on newborn wraps x2 with the low rise belly to accomodate the umbilical cord stump. But if we were likely to have future children to re-use them, I'd probably be more willing to get the newborns.

After the newborn stage, we had 16 pocket diapers, which wasn't enough. At 5 months, we have 24 pockets and AIOs and 2 fitteds for overnight. I wash diapers every other day. I would love 4 more pockets and 1 more fitted - I think 30 or more would be better at this age,

Wow, I'm glad that I asked...I don't think I was thinking realistically because I was assuming we'd need a lot less! I would prefer to not have to do a load of laundry every day, I'd like to aim at every 2 days.

I had 30. I only had that much because my dad offered to buy them, so I figured why not. It was more than I needed to have with doing a wash every day, but I like that I don't have to worry if something comes up and I can't do laundry every day or she poos a lot in one day I won't run out.
