I'm pretty against using bleach so I'll leave it as a very last resort... I may get some Bac Out though (we don't use BG dipes).

@MsMini: I'll try switching it up. I've already changed my first rinse to a warm rinse after hearing it helps get everything off (it has minimized our staining), but maybe a cold detergent wash will help...

@stargal: We have a top loader.

@joyjoy: @pelikila: Hmmm I'll have to look into a wet pail.

Thanks for all the suggestions ladies!

I could be wrong here, but I think Bac Out voids the warranty on BG products... :-/

I had to switch detergents bc the build up was bad even after stripping with dawn and bleach. We use ecos which is at our Costco!

We had to do a small wet pail for nighttime fitteds. I just used a plastic 5-gal bucket from the local home depot and filled it about 1/2 with water, put a 1/4 cup of bac-out and put nighttime fitteds and covers in there and then just dumped that in with the rest of the diapers each time we washed.

I haven't dealt with it personally, but I heard people have success with adding *more* detergent to the wash cycle.

We use hybrid fitteds at night, and I actually wet pail our overnight inserts because they would stink up the dry pail. I keep a little tub in our utility sink and fill it with water and a few squirts (regular top, not spray top) of Bac-Out.

@runsyellowlites: what kind of washer do you have? When we UAW our front loader I could never get the ammonia smell out, they would smell clean but stink like ammonia as soon as he pees. Went away as soon as I used our top loader. When we strip them o use blue dishwashing dawnsoap (BG recommends) and do 4 hot washes with rinces.

I have BG 4.0 also, they recommend 1/4 cup bleach added to the wash cycle once per month, it definitely seems to help.
I haven't tried it yet but I have heard of spraying with bac-out prior to putting in your diaper pail can help with the stink too.

I switched to a cold wash with detergent and then a hot wash no detergent extra rinse and that has worked the best for us. Some kids just excrete a lot of ammonia though ...

@runsyellowlites: I don't know what kind of dipes you have but we have BG 4.0s and have been really happy with the bum genius detergent. you can get it shipped free from the cotton babies website.

I usually pour some Bac Out in the first cold cycle. When I open the washer to start the hot cycle there is no ammonia smell left!

@aprk: No I haven't... not for that. I'll try it next wash (it's rainy here today so I'll have to wait).

@brownie: Hmmmm I already spend half the day washing from all the added "risnes" (a full "wash" cycle & then rinse pre soap & then then the same after).

@Baby Boy Mom: I hope we don't have to switch. I can't find any other cd safe detergent in the stores here so I'd have to order is. boo!

@T.H.O.U.: It's *only* the fitteds that we're having issues with.

Do you have inserts or flats you can boil? Or do you use AIos? I found the boiling helped a lot.

Rinse them after she wears them in the morning. We struggled with this a lot and I would just spend a whole day rinsing diapers. Just rinsing over and over again.

Lately I've noticed P's nighttime fitteds WREAK of ammonia in the mornings (ugh).

I've added an extra rinse cycle before washing with tide AND have added stripping them more often (don't smell when I pull them out) but they still smell after she wears them.

I read boiling dipes is one way but know that's not advised when you have elastic that could be damaged..... I'm going to try adding a couple tsp of tto to the wash today to see if that helps.

Any tried & true ways to get rid of it?
