We used gDiapers with cloth inserts most of the time, and the flushable inserts when we traveled & I loved it. The inserts have a fleece top with hemp on bottom. So, with that in mind...

1. We used 2 inserts in each diaper. Absorbency was not an issue. And when he switched to mediums from smalls (my guy is on the small side & potty trained at 20 months, so we never needed larges), we used a small insert beneath a medium one for less bulk. They worked well. GDiapers work best with slimmer kids, so there's that caveat.

2. I can't speak to that.

3. We used Costco "earth friendly" or free & clear, for all of our laundry. No problems. I stripped the diapers with dish soap or vinegar once in a while bc it was recommended, not bc it ever seemed necessary. DS does not have sensitive skin.

4. As long as your caregivers are on board, you can absolutely CD! It was more convenient to me, actually, because I never had to run to the store for diapers-- it felt luxuriously convenient as a busy working mom!

5. I can't speak to that since DS's skin isn't sensitive. But, since you can use the same detergent you already use, it shouldn't be an issue, except you may need to change more often to keep baby really dry. (Or, fleece topped inserts wick moisture away. We did an every 2 hrs schedule aside from poo, like a PP and it was fine for us.)

Thanks for the tips, everyone! Especially about the coconut oil and the free & clear or Tide detergents... we already use free & clear bc of DH's eczema, so I'm glad we probably won't have to make a big change there. As for drying any of the items, we'll either be using our dryer (sometimes) or line-drying in Phoenix AZ... so, it shouldn't be an issue. For other caregivers, I'll probably be "using" a SAHM friend for 2 months, and then Grandma will take over for the long-term. Since that will be in my house, and she's so excited about caring for LO, it shouldn't be an issue.

1. you could do that. AIOs take longer to dry though. I don't think it's a poor solution if you end up having leak issues.
A. You can have cotton, bamboo, fleece, mink and hemp against skin. No microfiber. Microfiber wicks away moisture so against the skin it often causes a rash.
2. With your definition of Hybrids I have not really had any issues. I use Best Bottoms on both of my kids. I've only had problems with my son because he tends to fuss with the diaper in his sleep and makes the fit all weird. When he does that he leaks out the top. I HATE pockets and this system is perfect for us.
3. My children are sensitive to most detergents. They however are not allergic to original Tide and I find it cleans the diapers better than most. I've tried a LOT!
4. It is realistic. I wash every 2-3 days. You have to do laundry anyways. A diaper load won't really be that much more and cleaning them is quite simple
5. Tips: with sensitive skin: test out soaps. Ones that are fine everywhere else may affect the diaper area.
Use a cloth safe method of 'cream'. I personally use coconut oil and I use it every diaper change. It's great for eczema. It also lasts a long time and smells amazing!

Don't use special detergent like rockin green etc...made my diapers funky! We use powdered Tide.

I teach and it's totally doable.

Coconut oil is a life saver for diaper rashes!!

Bahhhh typed a long response and HB ate it. To summarize:

1) You can use an extra insert, but you probably won't have to. We use BG Freetimes and they work just fine for my 15mo

2) I don't know what that is but I found pockets to be a PITA. I'm lazy so I like AIOs.

3) Don't use cloth diaper detergent. Use a good free and clear (I like purex). Refer to http://www.fluffloveuniversity.com for a solid was routine. Ignore any instructions that tell you to use like 1tbspn of some special detergent-- that is BS.

4) Yea it's really NBD. We do was e/o night. Prewash is turned on when we do the last diaper change before bed (before dinner). Main wash is turned on when we put her down. Into the dryer when I go to bed. Sometimes they get folded and sometimes not. :)

5) Use a good free and clear detergent. Change on a good schedule (I do every 2 hours if there is no poop).

You probably probably could do what you're describing for an AIO to increase absorbency but you can't adjust in the other direction. I found the AIO to be too bulky which is a reason I prefer pockets.

You can absolutely WOH and still cloth diaper, but not all child care providers will be ok with using them (4/5 daycare centers I looked at were fine with it), so make sure you check with whoever will be watching your child during the day.

@T.H.O.U: yeah, I wasn't sure how to define hybrids because some of the terms seemed to overlap! I edited the original post to hopefully clarify.

@DesertDreams88:

1. AIO are easy to put on but are expensive and hard to adjust. I think most anything but microfiber can go against the skin.

2. The term hybrid is a bit undefined. Do you mean like a snap in like GroVia? Or something that can be a pocket or a cover?

3. Usually CD suggests a free and clear detergent but I've also used just tide. So there is a wide range of what you can use.

4. I WOH and we did it. I washed every 2-3 days. Daycare had them in the bag. Every other night I would dump two bags into the washer and the. Hang dry before bed. They were ready to go in the morning.

4. Not really familiar here.

@DesertDreams88: I can't answer all of your questions but my LO's also have sensitive skin and we use an approved free and clear detergent (you just have to use a bit more) and it works good for my LO. It's really not too much work, we have about 18 diapers in our rotation but our LO is 1.5 so we do diaper laundry every few days. She wears disposables at night.

So, I've spent the weekend researching cloth diapers, and I have some questions I was hoping HBers could help out with some real-life experience! Feel free to respond to one, some, or all of the questions :)

1. A lot of the websites list “not able to adjust absorbency” as a disadvantage for AIOs. But, can’t you just use a skin-friendly insert like a prefold or a doubler?? Is this a poor solution because then then you’re basically using a pocket (2 piece) system for an AIO price?
A. Follow up on that question: Which materials are ok for use against skin and which have to have the protection of a pocket?

2. Hybrid diapers seem like the best of both (all?) worlds. What are the real downsides? Are there more leaks, because the only absorbent piece is the insert, vs. the entirety of a AIO or most of a pocket?
ETA: By hybrid I mean any system that allows you to use an insert/soaker, and reuse the "cover." I'm intrigued by the options in this video at the 10:00 mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64os5I4_Z9Q

3. Are most cloth-diaper detergents good for sensitive skin, and could be used for the rest of the laundry? Or, is that not cost-effective?

4. Is CDing realistic for a WOHM? DH & I are both teachers, so we will be home for all school breaks and summer, but it’s still intimidating.

5. What are your top tips for CDing with sensitive skin? DH has horrible eczema so it’s quite likely for all LOs.
