It could also be a yeast infection.

Anytime our girl gets them (I'm prone to them too), I make sure to run the dipes through a santize cycle!

@shopaholic: I found that my 4.0's without a liner made her a bit red. Mostly because like I said above due to the dampness sitting against her. The 4.0's are made with a different stay dry fleece type rather than the normal fleece that other brands use (but the other brands get pilly).

@mole: It is the Bumkins flushable liner? It says made with Viscose.

@Arden: Ecos detergent.

@loveisstrange: Me too! Ugh - sorry that happened!

@Weagle: Pre-rinse cold, Hot wash, Cold rinse.

@citymouse: I can't imagine they're not getting clean enough. We have an HE machine and the wash with all the cycles is like an hour and half at least? Once I switch back to disposables for a few hours, the redness goes away.

@swurlygurl: You use the coconut oil with the CDs? I thought that anything on them kind of ruins them?

* I'm going to try an extra cycle rinse today and then start an experiment: only 4.0s, only Freetimes, and without liners. See if I can pinpoint a culprit.

Does it look welt-y or slightly chemical burn-y? L gets that sometimes if I use too much detergent/don't rinse them enough. Those ones are a little harder to clear up, and require a day or two of constant oil-applying.

Also sometimes I notice that certain foods affect the acidity of her urine (I think??), and then sitting in the cloth diaper makes her bottom a little red. It would be different in a sposie because they wick away the moisture. I just give her bottom a good coating of coconut oil and she's good from there.

I was going to suggest detergent or the liner material as well. It could also be that they are not rinsing all the way. If you submerge one of the clean diapers in water and squish it around, do you see suds?

For the record, we use Triple Paste with our cloth (I know how hard it can be to find a cream that really works and is cloth diaper safe!) and it clears it up by the next diaper change!

Whenever we have had rashes it has been either using the wrong detergent, not changing often enough or a super heinous poo.

It could be the material (we could only use cotton diapers- no microfiber), a detergent sensitivity, or they're just not getting clean enough. What is your wash routine?

Usually the liners help rashes but they do hold moisture against the skin. Also, how often are you changing her? I found I had to be pretty diligent about changing every 2 hours to keep her bottom dry. Its just so much harder in cloth to feel when they are wet but the diaper is moist and sitting against their skin.

Honestly, this is why we stopped CDing. Horrible recurring rashes that I couldn't stop no matter what I tried. Cleared up in no time after we quit, so it was definitely the diapers.

Hopefully you can solve it.

What laundry detergent are you using?

It's possible she has a sensitivity to the fabric, I suppose? We use Freetimes and almost never have rashes.

Hmm. What is the liner made of?

You are right that it might be a sensitivity to the fabric -- or maybe to the feeling of wetness? We exclusively use cloth diapers, including 4.0s and Freetimes, and we've never had a diaper rash.

LO has had very few diaper rashes in her life. I've started to use CDs more often now and I've noticed almost every time she's in the CDs for most/all of the day, she gets a red rash around her private area (not the elastic area). It's not bumpy. Maybe a tiny bit raised? Just mostly bright red.

We use both BG 4.0 and Freetimes, so I can't figure out if it's a material thing? I also usually use a liner. Do you think that could cause it? The CDs are pretty new, so I can't imagine they have ammonia build-up? They don't smell or anything.

Any ideas?
