@magnolia: If you want to use a Free and Clear brand, I recommend Ecos Free and Clear. I use it on all of our laundry (I'm allergic to most mainstream detergents). If you want something a bit cheaper, Planet is a good brand as well. It comes in liquid and powder versions and the lists I've seen say it's okay to use it on cloth diapers.

@magnolia: I did a normal prerinse cycle and then I did a cycle with bleach in the bleach dispenser of my washer on hot with a soak session. I then did my normal cloth wash just to make sure they were well rinsed.

thanks everyone...ahh I thought any free and clear was what was recommended for washing. So much information out there, it's a bit overwhelming. I was using Ecover and then I switched to Rite Aid brand after the rash. Maybe I will try Tide...he is in pampers right now.

@lilyofthewest: the overuse of detergent is definitely an issue at my laundromat but I don't have much choice as I live in an apt. However I was all his clothes in those machines too so Im puzzled that his skin doesn't get irritated from that? But is affecting the diapers?
@Cole: hmm maybe I will look into the powder, I did get a prescription cream which cleared up the rash, I'm just bummed it came back so fast after I started the cloth again. How did you bleach the diapers? In the washing machine or soak before washing?

@magnolia: We had yeast pretty early on in our journey too. We did bleach all of the diapers (except the pul covers.) We were told to use the cream for five days after the rash was gone too. I also bought A baby powder that is made without cornstarch or talc and I can't believe how much it helps keep her skin dry. I was told it is a good way to keep yeast away and so far so good.

Good luck!i know it is no fun but it's beatable!

The laundromat could also be an issue. I can't use laundromat machines without ending up with horrible rashes all over. Lots of people use waaaaaay too much detergent in them, so, there tends to be leftovers of multiple scents/dyes/additives that I'm allergic to.

When I've absolutely had to use communal washers, I've decreased (but not completely eliminated) irritation by wiping out the drum first, doing a load of household laundry (dish towels, cat bedding, etc), then using the same washer for my clothes after.

@magnolia: Free and Clear isn't as powerful as regular detergent. It's suggested that you use 1.5 to 2 times the amount of F&C detergent as directed. We used to use F&C and it just wasn't getting them clean enough. I switched to regular Tide and the difference has been amazing.

Also, not sure what your wash routine is, but I would do a short cold cycle with Tide up to the 1st line. Then do a hot wash on the longest cycle (should be about 45 minutes) with Tide up to the 3rd line. Then do an extra rinse.

What brand detergent? If you want to use a free and clear detergent I would use Tide. If you use free and clear you need to use 1.5 times the amount of detergent listed for a heavily soiled wash. I would recommend just using original Tide unless you know your baby is sensitive to it. It will most likely get your diapers the cleanest.

I am using free and clear detergent, is that full strength? !

@littleblessings: I am using a commercial washer at the laundromat. And I did cold rinse at home before washing. I have Gerber and osocozy prefolds. The diaper prefolds don't smell after I change him or after I wash them, they are practically brand new...

Thanks for all the advice mamas..going back to disposable s until we are rash free and I can find time to sanit to ze these diapers...

Are they getting clean enough? Do they have a smell as soon as baby wets? What type of washer do you have? Do you rinse poop off right away? Does your washer with the diapers in it have a soup or stew consistency?

Did you bleach soak after the yeast diagnosis?

Could be sensitive to the soap. Had to change soaps many many times to find one that works. We found that SUN in the yellow bottle is the only one that works for us in our budget.

If you use pockets the child could be sensitive to the pocket material on the diaper. I've heard many cases of this.

What kind of inserts do you use?

Also, if you aren't already, be sure to use a full strength mainstream detergent, like Tide.

Here's an experiment people did with applying yeast to cotton prefolds: http://realdiaperevents.org/archives/cotton-prefolds-and-yeast-initial-results

Their initial results indicate that yeast does not live through the wash cycle. However, this probably assumes that you're using a hot wash and a powerful mainstream detergent. Boiling will kill yeast for sure.

There's also a possibility that yeast isn't the problem. You might want to use a more powerful diaper ointment if your baby has sensitive skin, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/GroVia-Magic-Stick-Diaper-Balm/dp/B00GBADUOG/

Are your bumgenius flips? Just PUL covers like the photo below? If so, don't worry about those. Just wash as usual. The problem is in the prefolds and inserts.

You don't actually need to bleach. You can boil prefolds. Boiling kills yeast and is a lot easier than bleaching. Just be sure that you do NOT boil PUL.

I second contacting the company to find out what to do about yeast in the diapers. Don't use them until you are sure the problem is resolved, because baby will recontaminate them too. Sorry you are dealing with that :( But the good news is you should be able to resolve the issue!

Did you make sure everything is prepped properly? Prefolds have to be prewar he'd at least six times before use. Also, maybe he is allergic to the micro suede in the BG? Is the rash worse in one diaper type over another?

ETA: yeast is hard to get rid of. You should definitely strip your diapers.
