@JamieLee: Late to respond here-- We ended up deciding to use disposables at night, so we just used the ones we got at night time. Since we got them in a variety of sizes and mostly good brands, it worked out fine.

Really, the part that drives me most nuts is that the hostess took what I said and did EXACTLY the opposite. It would've been fine if I hadn't said something, but as it was, I found (and still find) it very irritating.

My SIL had me put on her shower invite "N and J plan to cloth diaper so no disposables, please!" I think that should do it. If you get any you can always donate them or sell them cheap to local moms. Or maybe even return to some stores.

Also if you don't have a receipt you can return them to cvs for full price on a gift card. While we used disposables, we got lugs, Huggies etc and returned them all without receipts and bought other baby gear instead.

Cloth is totally doable. (and super cute for LOs bums!)

@stlginkgo: your comment of "sticking it to your MIL" hits a little close to home for me! So many people have been down on my decision to CD, some going so far as to make "bets" on how long we will last, so I guess I'm a little...sensitive.

I cloth diaper both LO1 (2.5yrs) and LO2 (4wks) and with my first I was adamant: NO SPOSIES! (I was super determined mostly to stick it to MIL) but as he aged and became a super heavy wetter at night we did eventually get some. They are handy to have around especially when laundry gets backed up.

I wouldn't get too concerned about getting some sposies as gifts. Just thank the person and return/exchange them for something you do need if you don't want them.

We didn't get a ton but we used them all. You can use them for trips, laundry emergencies and possibly overnight depending on how things go. I'd just try to go by word of mouth... I am not a fan of including a lot of gifting instructions on invitations. Just not my preference.

@JamieLee: And keep your fingers crossed for gift receipts! We did not get a ton so it might be good to check out the return policies. For example our target said they will take $75 worth of returns per ID in a year without a receipt.

We had every intention of starting cloth early but we had BG OS 4.0s so LO actually didn't fit into them until about 12 weeks due to her skinny skinny legs! So we went through lots of disposables during that time...

@blackbird: @yin: @birdofafeather: @artbee: I plan to use a hybrid system like GroVia which is sadly not sold at Target or BRU so I can't register for them...

@JerricaBenton: We will probably keep some, especially the newborn size. But I don't want those giant boxes I see people get! I don't even have anywhere to store that stuff.

@Pink Champagne: I will probably add a note to our registry. I didn't know if that was weird, but I would rather people know. We have no diaper service in our rural area, so no worries there! I imagine I will have lots of returning and exchanging to do post shower anyways...

@red_seattle: That is SO weird! What did you end up doing with all of them? You also just reminded me to tell my hostesses not to do a diaper cake - Thanks!

@pelikila: Thanks, I will add a short note. I just went to a shower for DH's cousin, so lots of the same people, and even though she had registered for a ton of cloth, she still got lots of disposables...I guess people didn't get the hint!

We also registered for cloth. I did not get any disposables at the shower but it seems like it varies. I agree that you will use the disposables at some point (as long you don't get a million trillion) so I wouldn't stress too much about it...good luck!

We registered for cloth diapers and people were smart and kind enough to not get us any disposables. There is no telling as people will do what they want, regardless; however, if you are really concerned, add a small note to your registries letting people know you will be cloth diapering and that disposables are not necessary.

Ugh. I specifically told our baby shower hostess to please not do a diaper cake or have people bring diapers because we weren't sure what we were going to do about diapers, there were lots of options we were considering like chlorine free disposables, etc, and that we were leaning toward cloth. She took that as a hint that I *did* want disposable diapers, so she sent out the invitation with a note asking everyone to bring them. I was so embarrassed. And kind of frustrated. When is saying the opposite a hint that you want something? And that I would go out and ask in that way? And I had to explain that all to mother-in-law when she asked what that was all about...

So, apparently asking specifically not to get them and asking your host to spread the word to the guests results in the opposite.

We just made sure people knew we were cloth diapering and added a note at the top of our registries. We didn't get any disposables, but we did get a gift certificate for a diaper service- and we were planning on using BumGenius. I wish the person who had spent the money on that GC had bothered to spend all that money on the diapers we wanted, instead of on something I wasn't able to use (my personal preference was that I didn't want to learn a new system-prefolds- when I had researched and decided on the pocket diapers).
Having one pack of each size disposable is a great idea though- we use disposable for bad diaper rashes, when we travel, and sometimes when his cute pants don't fit over a bulky cloth diaper ;). Keep in mind too that you can always take diapers back and exchange for other sizes or for things you will use (wipes, etc). Most people will bring you the receipt at the shower.

I added cloth diapers to our Amazon universal registry but we still got a ton of disposables. Honestly, depending on how many you get, I would keep some. We did and we were glad we had some to use at night in the first few weeks. We are still going through SO MANY diapers a day, it's nice to have some disposables if you get in a pinch with laundry.
