They definitely need to be tighter than disposables. We got some leaks way in the beginning when she was smaller, and some leakage when my mom was too afraid to put it on too tight :). We use AIOs, too. They should be snug!

Here's an old photo of E in her diaper when she was that small. Hers (we use Freetimes) went under her belly button. There was two snaps in between where I had buttoned them. There does seem to be almost a gap in the front but it's just the flap part. I've never had poop come out the front or back, always the leg. So i always make the legs tight.

@T.H.O.U.: Yeah, I think I may be hesitant to get them as tight as they should be because I'm afraid to 'hurt' him, lol. Smh.

I would say for sure the rise on an AIO should be the at the tightest setting. Definitely not all the way open.

I would also check to make sure they are being put on tight enough.

I think it depends on your diapers....my manufacturer says use half the recommended amount according to the load size. :) i dont know about stripping...maybe try without and see, then if that doesnt work give it a try? I have also heard the hardness of your water can affect how clean they get as well, so that may be worth looking into.

@danda: Okay, I'll try that again next time. I'll utilize the snaps on sides that snap ontop of the one another (if that makes any sense) and see if that's a better fit.

@Mrs. Lion: How much of the powder do you use when washing? Maybe I'll try just using the Tide then - should I just start on the next wash or do I have to strip them first?

I've had occasional poop blow-outs, and always through the leg holes. I have them frequently if I put her in disposables though!

At less than 3 months, most likely the rise should be on the smallest or middle setting, and you should be adjusting the waist tighter to prevent a big gap.

@Mrs. Lion: i read that about the elastic wearing out from the sun on the Rumparooz website. I have trouble imagining that to be more harsh than the dryer though!

The Free and Clear detergent could be the problem. If they are repelling that could be why. I heard a lot of complaints about that when I was researching in the beginning. The manufacturer of my diapers (rumparooz) recommend only using basic detergent with no whiteners and no softeners. I use tide powder (the original kind) and have never had an issue. I also heard not to line dry in the sun because the elastic wears out faster and it messes with the fit.

I guess I'm just unsure with the AIO. If there's three rise snappings and it's on the lowest or medium setting, there's a large gap in the front. No large gap when it's on the highest. So does that mean he should be on the highest (I thought that wouldn't happen until much much later?) or does it mean he isn't big enough to fit right in the AIO and I should just wait on them?

@MerryC: Alas, we do not! :(

@Mrs. Lion: Yes to the penis-pointing. I think the fit is only an issue on the newborn covers because we're using the newborn covers + the infant prefolds. The leaks on those have been either in the back or the legs. I know that one leak was an issue of the prefold material not being tucked in all the way in the back and I think that may be a recurring thing when he says the diapers "leaked", because the newborn covers are too small to contain the larger prefolds.

The Bumkins AIO cover is the only cover that's actually leaked through the actual diaper that I know for sure of.

@danda: The AIO diapers actually haven't leaked that I know of (it's hard to get him to tell me exactly what the leak was while I'm at work XD). The blowout just happened this afternoon and was just poop through the leg, which surprised me because it was certainly snug.

I don't know, it could be my washing! I'll do a repellent test tomorrow morning.

So far my washing has been, all diapers and covers in the washer. One pre rinse on cold. One wash on hot with Seventh Generation Free & Clear liquid detergent ( I washed with Tide powder one day when I couldn't get the other detergent) followed by two cold rinses.

Prefolds and fitted go in dryer on hot, while AIOs go in on low, tumble dry. Covers either go in with AIO on low, tumble dry or get hung on the line, depending on the weather.

Do you have a local cloth shop? That's what I always recommend for fit advice. Ours is so stellar and they've seen it all. They are often helpful over the phone if you can't get into one too....

We didn't start cloth until later so I'm no help :) good luck!

A couple things...

1. How are you washing them? This is the most common culprit for leaking (so I have heard).

2. Are you pointing his penis down before fastening the diaper? We had this problem. They would leak out the front and it would roll around him to his back while he was sleeping.

3. They should fit snugly, and none of the absorbent material should show outside the cover. It could be that he is not quite big enough yet for a OS. Im not sure about the rise...I think it is different for different diapers. Mine come just about as high as a disposable - right at his belly button.

We used different diapers from you (newborn fuzzibunz, bumgenius, and tots bots) but that's roughly the same age we started experiencing tons of leaks as she outgrew the newborn size. I bought one size diapers from a few brands, mostly Bumgenius and Rumparooz, and those two came with guides on weight ranges. For the rise, I don't really worry too much about it - I roughly followed the guide from the manufacturer and adjusted larger wheI felt there wasn't enough coverage above the butt crack - I don't pay any attention to where it falls near the belly button. For the waist, I've heard you should be able to easily get a finger or two in but not your whole hand. I tnk there's more than one "right" setting on the waist as I do have some variation in how I snap within the same day but typically the only time I ever leak out of the top is at night (she's sleeping 12 hours straight and I'm in the process of getting more absorbant inserts to combat the leakage issue).

Are you sure the leakage is a fit issue on the one size? Was the diaper soaked through? If not, if you put a drop of water on it, is it quickly absorbed or does it bead up? I had a leakage issue early on caused by cloth diaper friendly diaper cream, which still can cause repelling which requires stripping the diapers.

Sorry, in advance, for the length. I'm long winded @_@

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. While I was pregnant, I tried planning everything just so and had all these ideas of what I would do and how I would do them. Medfree birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering, blah blah blah. And everyone kept telling me how great it was to have plans, but don't expect everything to work out so well or come so easily - plan to be ok with plans not working out accordingly. And I would be all, "Yeah, yeah, of course, 'best laid plans of mice & men' yadda yadda." So my birthing plan went without a hitch. My feeding plan went without a hitch. And now diapering...oh, look...a hitch.

I bought sort of a hodge podge of diapers and was gifted some new & used. Here is what my stash currently consists of.

12 newborn prefolds (6-10lbs)
6 infant prefolds (7-15) lbs
4 used prefolds (unsure of size or weight or brand, they're green edged and are somewhere between the newborn and infant prefolds I have)
1 Kissaluvs newborn fitted (5-15 lbs)
1 hybrid fitted OS

2 Thirsties x-small diapers covers (6-12lbs)
2 Rumparooz newborn/preemie diaper covers (4-12 lbs)
1 Bumkins OS cover
1 Thirsties duo wrap cover Size 1 (6-18lbs)

2 Bumkins AIO OS
1 Simplex AIO OS

We used disposables until his stump fell off, then used newborn prefolds and covers during the day, sticking with disposables at night and during washing because we didn't have many to last us an entire day. LO is currently 8 weeks and was 10lbs the last time we had him weighed (around 2-3 weeks ago, so who knows what he weighs atm).

I have no idea what I'm doing in terms of fit. I think he's pretty much outgrown the newborn covers and that's the reason he's been leaking out of them. But I have no idea what a "right fit" looks like, especially on the OS AIO diapers where there's the adjustable rise and whatnot. Should the rise be under his belly button, above, in-line-with? How tight should the waist be? I never know if it's too loose or I'm making him uncomfortable or what. How do you know if a diaper is just not the right fit period?

DH was all on board about CD and now, after suffering some leakage and one blow out of the legs of the Bumkins AIO OS (and the legs were good and snug!) he's beginning to doubt this was a good idea. I, on the other hand, want to soldier on and figure out what we're doing wrong.

Right now, the Kissaluv newborn AIO and the Kissaluv fitted fit him the best.
