@mrsb DH is a carrier for staph and can get pretty bad eczema, especially in the winter. Our poor nephew has HORRIBLE eczema and is 4...scratches and scabs all over himself. I'm praying our LO won't have it, or maybe only a mild case--and hopefully also CD'ing will help some of it subside if it does pop up.

I don't have any advice on when to start or daycare because our LO isn't due until October but I do have an in home daycare and if a child was in cloth I would not have a problem with using them while the child was in my care. We are CDing our LO when he/she is born. We plan to start using them at the hospital. I have very sensitive skin and DS (now 3) also does. He used to get horrible rashes from disposables. This time around I have educated myself on all the different diaper options and we decided CDing was the way to go. It's not so much to save money but we just want to avoid all of the horrible rashes DS went threw.

This is SO helpful and gives me such a good starting point to find out some info on. It just seems like the $ investment in CD'ing pays of big time (at least that's what it seems like) too.

Definitely look into what policy the daycare has. All-in-ones/OS are the most like a disposable diaper, so they may not mind just chucking the dirty diaper into a wet bag. (By the way, PlanetWise has the best wet bags...no smells have ever emanated from these.)

BumGenius just came out with freetime all-in-ones which don't have you stuff the pockets with inserts.

It doesn't matter when they start. I started from the newborn stage, but many people start when they can fit into the OS diapers. In fact, it's probably easier when they're older because less changes mean less laundry cycles. Like a lot of the other posters, i use disposables at night and if we're going to be out for a while.

Initially I planned to use disposables until my LO outgrew newborns. I didn't want to invest money in newborn cloth diapers that he would only use for a short time. Well he outgrew them and I wasn't ready to start cloth... so I bought some size 1 diapers. I waited until he was 2.5 months old, and he has been in CD ever since (he's 14.5 months old). It's never too late to start. I know someone who was fed up with disposables that caused her DD horrible diaper rashes every time, and she started when her DD was 1.

I'm a SAHM and don't have any experience with daycare. Each one varies with their policies.

We didn't start cloth diapering until the umbilical came off so about 3 weeks old. We have never been exclusively cloth so we use disposables at night, and occasionally when out. So, you could probably go through the ones that you have already.

As far as daycare, we have a private babysitter and she has no problem with the cloth diapers we bring. We just rinse the poop after we get home. She just puts them in the bag.

I recommend the one size as well. We have had great success with cloth diapers even working full time.

we love our cloth diapers [bum genius freetime], LO is 12 weeks old. we have never had a leak in cloth diaper, she can even wear it all night and she never cries if the cloth diaper is wet. she doesnt like disposables and they are constantly blowing out. Our daycare doesnt allow cloth diapers, so once she startsdaycare next week, she will wear cloth only in the evenings, nights and weekends.

I know that some daycares don't allow cloth, so you should probably look into it. Our daycare is fine with cloth... otherwise you can always use disposables while your baby is at daycare. Most pocket diapers and all-in-ones are basically just as easy to use as disposables, so I think most daycares shouldn't have a problem with those diapers, just as long as you show them how easy it is. We also use disposables when we're going to be away from home for more than 1 or 2 diaper changes, so it's always nice to have extra disposables on hand.

DD is going on 3 months in cloth and we totally love it!

I don't have to deal with the daycare issue BUT you could always talk to them and go with an all-in-one style dipe for daycare... They're just as easy as disposables but would go in a wet bag to go home instead of the trash.

Start time is TOTALLY up to you! We started DD in cloth as soon as we got home and I was glad b/c she is a poop MACHINE (like 20+ changes a day for the first 2 months) & we didn't get and sposies at the shower... She was in sposies for a few weeks due to a yeast rash from antibiotics and we spent almost 200 bucks in just a months time! I couldn't image what we would've spent had she been in them the whole 13 weeks she's been alive. lol

I think that waiting till she fits in the "one-size" diapers may be great for you! DD still doesn't fit in hers at 3 mths (10lbs) so we have a "nb stash" for her. Waiting could save you money on start up b/c you'd only have to buy 1 stash for the entire time your lo is in dipes.

It can seem overwhelming at first (lots of information out there) but once you get it down it's pretty easy! Even DH feels that cloth is easier than sposies... even thought they're more "steps" in care he definitely prefers them!

I'm a SAHM so I don't have to deal with daycare, but I've heard of people just showing the diapers to the daycare and then once they see how easy it is sometimes they're ok with it.

I waited until my LO was out of newborn size to cloth diaper.... which for us was only 2 weeks. We use disposables occasionally for traveling so we do buy diapers sometimes, and you could always regift or take back some of the diapers if you wanted to do cloth.

I've been contemplating cloth diapering for a while and especially after reading the explosive diaper thread...am pondering on a few things.

Cloth diapering here is extremely uncommon. In fact, I've never even met someone who CD's. Does anyone think this would be a problem with me taking LO to daycare? How did you handle CD'ing at day care?

Second, would it hurt to not CD from the beginning? My work friends threw me a diaper shower before I fully decided on the diaper issue and we have tons of NB, size 1 and size 2 diapers. So...are there any particular pro/cons to starting CD'ing around when DS would be moving into size 3s?

Any big picture stuff else I might need to consider?
