You can't over-strip the diapers (per the BG rep I talked to). We were stripping them each month or every other month because of smell.

And yes, no more cream unless we're using a barrier.

I've never used cream or stripped my diapers (1+ year of use, BG 4.0) so they have a bit of ammonia stink, but no leaking.

I'm not sure the best way to solve your problem (I hope the video helps, I'm gonna watch it right after I type this! excited! haha), but maybe I would suggest not using any cream and stripping less often, perhaps? :) good luck and please do share what works in the end!

We have another brand (Sunbabies), but only 6 of them. We get leaks with them too, and they don't have cream on them. I am going to try the tip from the video.

@avivoca: Oh my goodness! THAT VIDEO! I never knew ... and I've totally been putting them on like a disposable. I kind want to do a dance right now.

I bet this is the issue!

As far as the diaper rash cream, I've used creams which are "approved". I use Motherlove Thrush and Diaper Rash cream. BUT, after talking with the BG customer service, I will always be using a barrier. They gave me tips to strip. We actually only use 6 or so dipes when using the cream, and the other 18 have never had cream on them. They all leak.

I'd tighten the top snaps. My LO's thighs are chunkier than her stomach so I always have to have the top snaps 1 snap closer to the center than the bottom snaps.

@Vegmama: I would definitely tighten the waist and stay on the middle rise. The BG website talks about using bleach under "other washing tips." Dawn can ruin your washing machine.

@Vegmama: How are you putting the diapers on? Apparently there is a right vs. a wrong way (most people put them on like a disposable, but there's another method). Here's a YouTube video I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3vRWLC9UE0

Also, how many inserts are you using? Are you open to trying a different type of diaper to see if the fit is better and stops the leaks?

Hi! Obviously I know a ton about cloth diapering (not) but could you buy one or two new ones and see if you have the same problem? That way if it continues to happen you know it's fit and if not it's possibly due to water repelling? Just a thought. Xo.

Regular diaper rash cream causes major repelling to the point where use of it actually voids the warranty on BG diapers, because it is SO difficult to strip it entirely out of the diaper. Does there seem to be any pattern to which of the diapers leak and which don't or is it just random?

Here are some pics. Green diaper shows a fully extended riser, and pink diaper is one snap. I don't like the gap that happens with the middle riser. Same with Velcro and snaps.
Gap is worse with only 2 open snaps in the middle.

Using non-CD safe cream will definitely make them leak. My parents used some buttpaste (instead of the CD-safe cream we had), and I had a hell of a time getting that out of the inserts. The inserts they used it on repelled water as much as they absorbed, so we had serious problems with those. I had to throw one diaper away because even using a wire brush and scrubbing (one of the recommended ways to get the cream out), it didn't work. We've had leaking issues too with the BG, and I think in part it's because my DH and daycare provider don't snap them tightly enough. Not enough absorbency can be an issue too. I have to put more in at naptime & bedtime. Our LO is 30 months / 28 pounds and still on the middle rise (he leaked on the top rise). I have to use disposables for naptime at daycare now because he was blowing out (poop) every naptime. I swear it's because they don't know how to put them on tightly enough.

We're going to have to try boiling ours because no amount of stripping or drying in the sun has removed the barnyard stink from them.

@T.H.O.U.: If she's napping, the insert is usually wet. But, she'll go all night (10 hours) without leaking sometimes. Yet, she'll leak through during a 45 min nap? And, if it's a top leak immediately after changing, the diaper isn't wet at all.

Our poor nanny has to change her outfits like 4 times a day! ETA: we've taught her how to properly place and secure the dipes.

The only things that helped us with leaks was changing the type of diaper we used and also using a hemp insert under the regular inserts. She peed through a fitted and cover until we used the hemp insert, and I also use it with the BG pockets.

Can you make the diaper tighter at the top and possibly shorten the rise?

@Tidybee: We've used cream before, but isn't that the purpose of stripping? Most times, if we need to use cream, we put a disposable insert on top of the fabric, so the cream isn't on the diaper. However, we have used the cream and diapers before.

For everyone who's suggestion to go down a riser snap, we just raised it last week, because she was leaking out of every. Single. Diaper. :( It's always out the top or top of the leg. We are careful when putting them on that the fabric is all laying the right way. Maybe I can snap a photo today to show the fit of both.

My DD is about 20 lbs and we are still on the middle rise. I say go down a snap row! The only time she leaks is when we don't double stuff inserts and she pees a lot. She is 15 mos.

Eta: not sure what you do to strip, but we changed our regular wash routine to 1) cold rinse, 2) hot wash with soap and second rinse, 3) hot wash + second rinse. If I use color safe bleach (once a month per BG instructions), I repeat step 3. I haven't had too many problems!

An LO I nannied used BG Freetimes, and hers started leaking a lot when she got a bit older (maybe she was peeing more, or holding her pee and peeing more at one time? I don't know). I shortened the rise and started using a hemp insert (underneath the microfiber ones). Worked like a charm! If shortening the rise alone doesn't work, definitely get a couple hemp inserts to see if that helps. They're so thin, you can hardly tell a difference (no added bulk).

Yeah, I would tighten it up. We also use BG 4.0 snaps.

Also, I don't know if this would help the leaking, but stripping with blue dawn did not work for us. I use bleach once a month as BG recommends and when I really had stink issues I boiled all my inserts as @Beebug: mentioned. I then soaked everything in Rockin Green Funk Rock and now use that during my prewash cycle. Hope you figure it out!

Have you tried the middle riser option?

I feel like I only recently (25lbs/20m or so) moved my DD into the fully opened option. I definitely know she could have had them opened sooner, but given your leaks, maybe snap down?

Also, inserts, are you using the BG ones, or ?

Are your elastics (legs) in good shape?

I strip by way of boiling, have heard good and bad re: Dawn, so figure doing nothing but boiling water to ensure they are clean clean is an okay way. Also, is stripping that often necessary? It seems like a lot, but I'm not sure.

We only use 4.0s, all with snaps (or once velcro converted to snaps!) fwiw.

We are currently dealing with leaking diapers (usually out the top or side). We use Bumgenius AIO and 4.0 with both the snap and velcro closure.

Our baby is 7.5 months, about 20 pounds, and we have the diaper riser fully extended (snapped to the 4th snap on each side).

We try to trip the diapers once per month. The stripping process is 1 cold rinse, hot wash with Dawn dish soap, and a hot rinse. Is that the right way to strip?

They appear to be fitting properly, but I feel like they shouldn't be leaking so much. Help us figure this out! :)
