I also found that simple diapers like flats and prefolds washed great no matter what. It was only the all-in-ones and synthetics that needed the updated routine with my front loader.

Have you joined that Fluff Science cloth diaper group on FB? The ladies are a little... extra passionate about CD but they do give really helpful, specific advice. Just follow their VERY STRICT rules about posting and they won't eviscerate you like they did me.

Just adding that I have been successfully CDing for the past 5 months in my front loader, after having a toploading agitator.

My washer has a delay start timer, so I try to load the diapers up the night before and have the first wash completed before I wake up. Then I roll out of bed, peel/fluff/bulk & add more detergent and start the second wash. this saves a ton of time, and then diapers are usually done by 9-10am.

We have a front loading HE machine and haven't had any issues. We do a quick wash (cold water, heavy wash setting, line 1 Tide detergent) followed by a heavy duty wash with the addition of our cloth napkins and cleaning rags to bulk up the load (hot water, heavy wash setting, line 4 Tide). I will occasionally add a little bleach every 2 months or so if I think they're getting stinky too quickly.

Yep. I don't use microfiber, only cotton and hemp. What I do is rinse and spin (no soap) followed by hot and heavy with tide powder for ebf poop. Once baby starts solids I spray poops and change the first cycle to a quick wash with soap.

Another vote for fluff love and finding your washer. I cdd my second with a front loader. We add towels to every load but they are the towels we use to clean the house when the kids spill (every day!). I actually like it better than my top loader because I can set it and leave it to do almost the whole thing by itself instead of having to be there to start every cycle. It took all day with both washers but this way I only have to restart it once or twice, not multiple times.

I hated doing diapers in my front loader, but made it work. We did big loads (though I never added towels or anything like that). I used fluff love university's recommendations for my specific washer, and used regular Tide powder plus borax. I still found I had to strip them, but that could have just been our exceedingly hard water.
we just got rid of that washer and replaced it with a top loader. so glad!

Seconding fluff love university!

I do a hot Quick Wash with just the diapers. Then I add clothes (no really big stuff like bath towels!) so it's 2/3 full on a Heavy Duty hot wash.

What detergent do you plan on using? I have to use Tide and Calgon for my hard water.

Please check out Fluff Love University! Their website has lots of information. But if you join their facebook group (Fluff Love & CD Science) they will give you exact instructions for your washer & detergent. If you run into any trouble, they will help you troubleshoot as well.

We started with a top loader and then moved to a front loader too. I will share the changes we had to make to keep the diapers clean and fresh.

Switched to a mainstream detergent (tide original powder).

Made sure the load was 2/3 to 3/4 full; this ensures adequate agitation. Best to use smaller items to bulk load; I used kitchen towels mostly.

Did a hot quick wash with a little detergent to remove the yucks followed by a heavy wash on cold with full detergent.

Used washing drum cleaner regularly to keep the washer in good shape.

I never tried the “tricking the washer” stuff. I think that’s fallen out of favor now.

Best of luck!

Hi Mamas! I successfully cloth diapered my first baby an old school top loading machine. But we moved into a new house with a front loading HE machine around her first birthday and I remember being SO frustrated trying to clean them in my new machine. They seemed to never get clean no matter how many extra soaks and sopping wet towels I threw in to trick the machine. They always smelled bad with that washer and I gave up after a few months. Pregnant with #2 now and I’m not sure I have the patience for the multiple hours per load it will take to get them clean. I’m thinking of just doing disposable! Do you have a successful cloth diaper cleaning routine for your front loading HE? If so I would love to hear your experience.
