I use the Bum Genius pockets and my daycare (in home) lets us use them. They are so similar to disposables that she doesn't mind. Just puts the dirtys in a bag and I deal with them at home!

Mine does, they actually have a diaper service that comes in once a week to collect the soiled prefolds and drop off cleaned ones. I just had to provide the diaper covers. I bought 10 and my son has used them since he was 4 months old, he's now 18 and they still fit fine.

I never really considered cloth diapers but maybe I would for #2. However, does anyone's day care allow cloth diapers?

We bought used Bum Genius 3.0 AIOs and I LOVE them. Seriously, it's really not bad as far as touching poo. I mean, I got poo on me from just cleaning Wombat's toosh. Plus, I'm already washing my hands after each diaper change anyway.

We use the bum genius AOI (elementals) and they are super super easy. No inserts to remove and wash, also saving us from re-stuffing them again which (to me) is a time commitment when you have a new baby. We just throw them in the wash along with cloth wipes, then the dryer (or line dry when weather permits) and then back into the 'clean' basket. The only difference between these and disposables is the wash every 2nd or 3rd day. And on top of being good for the environment, they save a ton of money and no diaper rashes/chemicals on baby's bum.

Son is now potty-trained but I'm happy to share advice if anyone is interested.

After using pockets, prefolds, hybrids, fitteds, and AIOs - I've used them all - my favorite combo is a prefold folded in thirds like a letter and put into either a Flip cover or a Little Beetle wool cover. For daycare or where people want to keep things super simple, pockets like the Bum Genius or AIOs are great.

At one point my son was a super heavy wetter because he could sleep 12+ hours straight & nurse throughout the night. The "bullet proof" option was not a disposable but actually cloth with help & a wool cover.

We used disposable inserts in the beginning but honestly after while it wasn't any more effort to use cloth. I have actually done cloth while travelling for weeks at a time (if we're staying at a place that has washer & dryer access).

Plus, my son didn't always poop at the same time so it's hard to coordinate the poop with the disposable inserts, and you are supposed to dump the solids into the toilet anyways so that it can be properly treated at a sanitation plant.

Of the disposable inserts, I prefer (in order): gDiapers, GroVia, then Flip.

We got a roll of disposable liners but ended up not using them in the end.

I use cloth diapers because it is cheaper and better for DS's skin. Considering how much water I use to rinse and wash, I doubt I am helping the planet.
Where I live, garbage is incinerated, so I don't worry too much about filling a landfill with diapers that take forever to decompose. FWIW, you're not supposed to put poop diapers in the trash, you are supposed to dump the poop in the toilet and dispose of only pee diapers. I don't think many people do this, though.
We use gdiapers with gcloth during the day. I use a disposable/flushable liner with them to help with clean up. I rinse what I can, soak the insert in water and wash every few days. I do use disposables at night, because DS is a heavy wetter and I don't want him to wake up because his diaper is leaking.
I chose gcloth because I liked the concept of having a one size fits all liner. I bought 24 of them and 6 size medium pants, which will last until DS is 28 pounds. Then we'll get 6 size large pants and call it done until he is toilet trained.

I'm curious--how do the disposable inserts work? How do you know to use them with just the poo diapers?

We do not have any babies yet, but I'm am wanting to learn some more about cloth diapers in hopes that we can use them.

@habesbabe, i would use disposable only for the poopey diapers, all the pee ones would be washed. seeing that i change say 6-8 diapers a day, only 1 or 2 are poopey diapers so in the end it would still be cheaper and better for the environment.

i was wondering-- if you use a disposable liner, doesn't that defeat the purpose of cloth diapers? you're still buying something disposable, etc. don't the costs of the liners end up canceling out the savings of the cloth diapers in the first place?

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I know I have alot of research to do on my end, but a Hybrid option might be best. Yes they seem so costly at the beginning but I know it will be cheaper in the end.

Another vote for bumgenius...we love the 4.0 pocket diapers. If you'll already be washing the covers, washing the inserts is no extra work. I've blogged a bunch about them, but I'm happy to answer any questions if I can help at all!

As for the poo, we just put in a disposable liner. We lift it out and throw it away and there is no poo on the diaper or the insert.

We are going to try the Bum-Genius AIOs. Hubs said he would be up for giving the cloth a whirl (especially since I am so set on them) but he is SUPER hesitant about inserts, and having to touch poo unless it is absolutely necessary. ha! I've read a lot of blogs that seem to have given them great reviews, and I am even more set on the decision to try every time I see the mounds of diaper boxes that our neighbors put out to the curb every week!

Even though I'm not so great at keeping up with laundry, I'm really going to give cloth diapers a try. They may be a big investment up front, but they save money in the long run and are much easier now than they used to be.

For Mavi I opted to go disposable. Maybe it seemed easier for me, maybe it's because Cloth isn't something "popular" where I live, or maybe it was because I wanted to go with something I knew because having a baby was all unknown to me.

I know there are some great cloth options out there, and that many people have blogged about it... but when it comes time for baby deux, I'm seriously considering it. Plus, I just found out that my city they give back 150$ when I buy a certain amount of cloth diapers.

I don't think I would go all out with washable inserts. But the idea of having disposable inserts seem very interesting to me. Are there specific brands you suggest (for those who have done it) Do you have specific posts that are must read about the topic?

I would love to start getting educated on the subject, and in the end I know we will save a TON of money. Thanks!
