My DD has some clothing issues -- she doesn't like tags and has to change if her clothes get even a drop of water on them. The biggest thing is the toe seam in socks, though. We mainly turn her socks inside out and let her wear them like that, she says it feels better. I've tried to find socks without toe seams but they're surprisingly rare.

My skin is WAY sensitive right now just because the winter is so dry. I was just complaining about my tag. I wonder if the dryness might explain why she is extra picky right now.

@BeachMama: DD who is 4 will do the same thing and went through phases of complaining about itchy shoes. I found that a lot of it can be caused by attention seeking tendencies. I'll try to probe to find out if its really itchy by saying do you want to change shoes or would you rather {Insert something fun she likes to do} if its really uncomfortable then nothing distracts her from that and she will insist on changing.
I'll also ask her if putting on a sticker on her shirt helps and she will sheepishly say yes and then i know she isnt really itchy

@kaykay: thanks. We do most of those things too. She picks out most of her outfits and things are tagless and the right size. I almost want to OT to help ME more than her - to give me strategies to deal w it instead of the morning ending in tears

My almost 5yo has similar issues. They aren't extreme enough to warrant evaluation/OT for them, but they can definitely slow us down and be frustrating some mornings!

Some things I have found that seem to help a bit:
- let her pick out her clothes, head to toe. she tends to have favorites that are most comfortable for her.
- for underwear, mostly tagless.
- make sure all of her clothes are the right size. i notice she tends to complain more when things are starting to get too small (esp socks and underwear)
- when i buy something, i make her try it on. if she complains at all about it, it goes back, no matter how cute i think it is. if she complains initially, it's likely not going to get worn!
- especially for socks, i've started telling her that if they're still bothering her after X (i.e., we brush teeth, we get to school, etc), then she can change. usually by then she's gotten used to/over whatever the issue was.

it sounds like you might already be doing some of this, and/or your DD may be more sensitive to it, but maybe one of those ideas will help?

if not, i'd definitely look into some sort of OT, especially if it's making you late and/or frustrating you EVERY day.

I don't have any direct experience, but I have a friend whose son really benefited from OT. He refused to wear long sleeves, jeans, and other types of fabric. He was also quite picky with foods and would gag on different textures. They've found OT to be very helpful.

I have a 4.5 year old who is very sensitive to her clothing - seams on socks can ruin a morning, pants or shirts are too itchy (even if they're soft and tagless), and now her undies tickle her bottom. It seems to have really increased over the past month. She's also a fairly picky eater (will only eat 1 brand of hot dogs).

I try hard to be patient and understanding, but it's getting difficult. It can make a morning very difficult, trying to get her, her brother, and myself ready and out the door.

Any tips on how to deal with it, how to keep your cool, or anything in particular to say to defuse the situation? I'm thinking about trying OT to learn some strategies.
