You can have spotting just before O - if you look on my chart I had it this cycle and last:

@chibee: I've never used OPKs before, so I can't give you a lot of advice on them, but I'm under the impression that if you get the +, then you probably did ovulate. Unfortunately the only way to know for sure is to temp I think.

@Adira: now i'm a little nervous because I didn't chart last month and now i'm not even sure I o'd! I did get 2 days of + OPKs in a row but without a thermal shift I guess there is no way for me to know. I've been experiencing EWCM the last two days with very negative OPKs. I guess i'll keep temping and see what happens!

It sounds like you're experiencing multiple patches of fertile CM due to delayed ovulation (as you didn't ovulate until around CD27). Here's an excerpt from Fertility Friend:

Why do I have several patches of fertile cervical fluid?

Several patches of eggwhite fluid with no clear thermal shift may mean that you are having an anovulatory cycle or delayed ovulation. You can have "fertile-like" cervical fluid and still not ovulate. If you have several cycles that show this pattern without an associated thermal shift, you should ask your doctor to help determine whether or not you are ovulating.

If you have several patches of eggwhite cervical fluid and a temperature rise, then your ovulation was probably delayed due to some external reason. As long as ovulation is not already clearly indicated, you should still have intercourse at least every other day when you see eggwhite cervical fluid to make sure not to miss an opportunity.

@Grace: that's interesting! Although it wasn't around ovulation time for me, but it makes me nervous that it is considered "extremely fertile" bc if it is I def missed that window!! Did you have your Dr's appt yet? I'd love to know what he/she thinks! I am now getting something like EWCM and i feel like O is near.. oh the confusing land of CM.

@chibee: I found the answer in TCOYF! Here's what it says:
"About 10% of women will notice that they occasionally have a day or two of spotting about midcycle, right around ovulation. In fact, they may even notice the fertile cervical fluid (especially the egg white quality) is tinged with brown, pink, or red. This is a result of spotting mixed with cervical fluid. It is considered extremely fertile. It's usually due to the sudden drop in estrogen the proceeds ovulation and is nothing to be concerned about. If anything, it is a good secondary sign to record on your chart. It's typically more common in long cycles.

You can tell that it is ovulatory spotting because it occurs within a couple days of the thermal shift. If, however, spotting lasts more than a couple days, is bright red, or you notice spotting at other times in the cycle that do not coincide with ovulation or the approach of your period, it could be indication of a problem requiring medical attention, or possibly an early sign of pregnancy."

@chibee: I've had the same thing this cycle too! What the hell is that?? I've never had brown tinged CM before, it's so weird. I have an appointment with my dr on Monday to get some testing done and I'll try to remember to ask her what's up with that.

I definitely would have thought so, except I am using OPKs and confirmed O last time at the later date, and I am definitely negative as of right now too!!

I still think it sounds like EWCM. It doesn't have to be watery. The EWCM late in your cycle is from a secondary estrogen surge that happens about a week after O.

So I observed this last cycle also. Around the same time (last time was CD14, this cycle CD12 - I had what looked like was EWCM but more... springy, not as watery/eggy - clear, tinged a bit brown, like more mucousy. Last cycle, I thought it was EWCM and thought I'd O around then but didn't end up getting actual EWCM until like 10 days later and I o'd CD27 or so. Today, at CD12, I have the same kind of CM again! What is this?? It's definitely not EWCM, I now know the difference. It doesn't seem like old blood bc I've had the lotion-y CM for the past couple of days before this. Anyone have any idea? It's clear, tinged with the slightest hint of brown, very springy and pretty stretchy. So confused!
