Puffy or thick costs are not safe for any rider - children in car seats, children in boosters, or adolescents and adults using just the seatbelt. It has nothing to do with age or size. That said you can find car seat safe coats. It's not a simple "no coats" rule.

The csftl link above should be really helpful.

My understanding is that a thin layer (vs puffy coat) is safest for everyone regardless of age. It’s funny though, my oldest who is in a booster is so used to taking it off that even when I’ll say she can keep a thinner coat on she won’t do it! Doesn’t feel right I guess.

My kids wear car seat safe coats! (right now I have one in a Columbia fleece, one in a Gap Prima Loft, and one in a Mamut)

At what age/size can kids start wearing a coat in the car? When they switch to a seatbelt? That seems strange since I see parents choosing to switch to a booster at different times/ages.

I can't find a recommendation from a safety study online.
