Definitely poverty. While cocaine exposure would affect how a baby is at birth & initial development, poverty just about dictates a persons complete perspective, self worth, and self viewed ability to excel long into adult & usually down through the generations even. It's horrible!

Absolutely poverty. Whilst cocaine is never good, the effects of poverty are so much further reaching, long lasting, and powerful in their impact (in a negative way). I didn't even read the article yet but I'm going off my experience as a social worker, having worked with both populations (drug users and impoverished families). It is shameful just how poor the outcomes are for the impoverished in countries like the US where a strong social safety net is not in place.

My mom was telling me about this today. Both of my brothers were exposed by their birth mom, and we were shocked by the effects of poverty.

It's poverty, baby. We need to do a better job of addressing disparities in this country. The war on poverty needs to make a resurgence.

spoiler alert...

" "Poverty is a more powerful influence on the outcome of inner-city children than gestational exposure to cocaine," Hurt said at her May lecture. "

Wow. I found this interesting! http://articles.philly.com/2013-07-22/news/40709969_1_hallam-hurt-so-called-crack-babies-funded-study?utm_content=buffer8756e&utm_source=buffer&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Buffer but I majored in sociology so I'm probably a biased nerd.
