We're not yet TTC (just one month to go) but I've been trying to get into the right place, health-wise. I've cut back to one cup of coffee most days - that seems to be within the clinical recommendations. I would SUFFER in the mornings without it - I'm not looking forward to how hard it will be if my body rejects the taste of it when I'm KU.

I have a cup a day. My midwife said it's fine to have that one cup of home brewed (not a giant starbucks cup), and what I've read seems to support that. It's been hard to resist the afternoon cup, especially since I'm So. Completely. Exhausted. But without my morning cup, I don't think I could get out of bed!

I wouldn't switch to decaf yet, but maybe cut down to 1-2 cups a day. I only switched to decaf after BFP and it actually took me a couple weeks of half-caf before going completely decaf. I will still have a cup of caf from time to time because I know I am easily under the limit.

I had a cup a day most of my pregnancy. There were some times during the first tri where it made me really sick though, then I was going with tea to stave off the caffeine withdrawal headaches.

I was a HUGE coffee drinker. in the months leading up to TTC, I slowly tapered for about 6 months so I was down to about 15% of my original coffee intake. I was intending to continue to drink this amount during pregnancy but coffee makes me feel really sick now so I can't drink it at all, anyway. Glad I tapered off, otherwise I'd have been in withdrawal hell.

I'm in love with raspberry white mochas and I probably drink one grande a day. Occasionally I'll have a soda for lunch or dinner as well, so I guess I'm averaging about 2 cups a day. DH and I have discussed this, and I'll probably still have 1 tall size mocha a day throughout my pregnancy. My best friend drank grande or venti sized frappucinos and more every day of her pregnancy. Her baby turned out perfectly healthy, so I'm not very worried. And I've also read that sticking to one cup is perfectly fine for the duration of your pregnancy. I may try abstaining a bit during the first trimester, but I'm honestly unsure of how I'd get work done from about 8-10am each day lol. I am NOT a morning person!

I don't drink coffee (don't care for the stuff)

But I do drink tea. When we first started ttc I was very careful. I only had 1 cup of regular a day during my tww every month. But after 4 months ttc with no luck, I said "screw it" and now I'll drink as much tea as I want. Usually this is 2 or 3 cups a day, sometimes it is more like 5 or 6.

@jh524: I am not pregnant yet, but I discussed this with my doctor yesterday at my pre-conception appointment. He said a good rule of thumb while TTC/pregnant is one caffeinated drink per day (one cup of coffee, one diet coke, etc.)

So, new question for those coffee drinking bees..... Did you drink coffee when you were pregnant? From the research I've seen, it seems to be safe if under 200m.g. a day or approx. 1 -2 small cups of coffee. What did you do?

I quit caffeine entirely when we started TTC - I switched to decaff tea and coffee and caffeine free Coke. Then I read somewhere that the chemicals used to decaff the coffee might be worse for you than the caffeine... and now I don't know what to believe! Seems you can't win!!

I started to reduce my caffeine intake when we first started TTC. I wanted to prepare my body for what I had hoped to be a quick journey to pregnancy. 14 months later, no pregnancy, and I've I've pretty much stuck to half caffeine drinks ever since. I enjoy the ritual of coffee everyday. I'll probably try to switch to decaf tea shortly. I wish all I had to do was cut caffeine out of my diet in order to be preggers! Why can't it be that simple??

My doctor said it was ok to have up to 300 mg/day, which is 3 cups of coffee. I only had one cup/day for awhile, and then around week 7, it just lost all its appeal to me and I stopped drinking it. It was too acidic for me. I still have a hot green tea (50mg of caffeine) or diet coke (35mg) once in awhile.

I was a 3-4 cups a day girl. When TTC I went down to 2 at first, and then when I had two months of BFN's I started to doing 1 cup of regular in the morning and then my second cup would be half-caf or decaf... I thought I would die if I gave up coffee when pregnant, but find that I'm not as drawn to it now. I don't know if it's psychological or an aversion but I'm ok with it either way!

@jh524: For the decaf thing, I'm not convinced it's that much better, because then you are getting the chemicals that they use to decaffeinate it. I may be getting into to crazy paranoid territory here, but I think a small cup of regular is better than the chemicals in decaf, unless you are sure they are using the Swiss Water Process, which has a lot less residual chemicals. I was planning to just switch to decaf since I love sitting with a hot cup of coffee in the morning, regardless of the caffeine, but after I read that I decided just a small cup at home is OK for most days.

@Ree723: I agree completely.

1-2 cups a day for most of the time. I quit for about the first 5 months of ttc, decided to un-quit since I was miserable anyway, and got the bfp 5 months later.

Having a baby has made me want coffee more than ever before, it is a must have for me to survive the early mornings! I usually have my cup after bf'ing to give the caffeine some time to wear off before the next feeding.

I drank my normal amount while TTC (venti Americano), went cold turkey as soon as I got pregnant (withdrawal symptoms were horrible... I really thought I was dying!), and started drinking 1 cup a day after the first trimester (kept it to 150 MG of caffeine daily). Now that I'm nursing, I try to limit my coffee to 2 cups a day. I feel like I should drink less than that, but I'm just so tired all the time that I can't.

I think you can have up to 200mg of caffeine a day while pregnant, so I think you're totally fine with 1-2 cups a day, especially while you're TTC. You should look into the caffeine content of the coffee you drink though and try to keep it low if possible. Maybe you could do half decaf/half regular in order to lower the caffeine content and still have your coffee.

thanks for the advice everyone! Im gonna try to stay at 1 a day, only because it makes me crazy to think of not having a cup of coffee a day. I'm guessing it will be easier said than done once Im pregnant because then the reality of nourishing a baby takes control over my daily coffee habit. What about decaf though? Has anyone drank decaf coffee throughout their pregnancy or while ttc? If i dont get pregnant within 4 months of ttc while drinking 1 cup a day, I will try to switch to decaf or none at all...yikes!!

I was drinking 1-2 cups/day for our first few cycles TTC. Once i started to get more.. proactive (/desperate) about it, I ended up cutting back to a couple of cups a week, and we got our BFP cycle 6. That was with a lot of other "stuff" (fertility monitor/charting/OPKs/pre-seed/etc) so no way to know if it helped, but I wanted to pull out all the stops.
