I couldn't drink coffee during the first tri because it made me sick (as did everything, actually). But around 15 weeks I was able to start again.

On any given day (depending on the nausea) I'll have about 4-12 oz of coffee (the milk is incl. in that number). On days where I'm more nauseous, I'll get a McD's Mocha Frappe or Honey Dew Frozen Mocha instead.

I've tried to skip coffee some days and end up with a nasty headache, so...I'm just keep on keepin' on. My doctor said in times of a headache, to have a little caffeine before tylenol. I thought that was interesting, but hey - I keep it below 150-200 mg/day so I'm not too worried.

I'm totally incapable of going half-ass with coffee and I know it would only be a matter of time before I was drinking way too much. So I just cut it out entirely, that way I don't have to worry. I'm definitely more on the cautious side of things. Plus, recently the smell of coffee has been making me want to upchuck.

@regberadaisy: the fussiness is always so mysterious. Mine was fussy yesterday, and I finally figured out that he had (lots and lots of ) gas. I couldn't believe how much gas came out of that little bum. So then I ask myself, what did I eat that gave him suddenly so much gas? What I ate that morning? The night before? The afternoon before? Or is it entirely unrelated to what I eat? Who knows?!

@cvbee: yeah..I'm thinking that's the case with me. i stayed away from it completely during pregnancy. And I've had caffeine 3 times thus far and each time she was extremely fussy that night. Yesterday I had 2 sips and last night for the first time in weeks she was extremely fussy. Could have been a coincidence, who knows?

I just used the 200mg threshold as my guide, between coffee and anything else caffeinated (there were times when I was nauseous that regular Coca-Cola seemed more palatable than any other drink).

@cvbee: I read that the caffeine has not been shown to go through to breastmilk (NPR health blog or something). I was happy to see that.

I'm weaning myself down now. I know I'm addicted, and I'm pretty affected my caffeine in that an afternoon iced tea can keep me up at night, so I'd like to get to the point that it is optional. I've got 2 months to get there, so this week starts the only 1 cup a day. Baby steps.

I skipped it during the first trimester, then moved on to "half caf" during the second trimester. By the third trimester, I was drinking the same amount and strength that I did pre-pregnancy. My midwife was fine with it as long as it was in moderation. Now I'm nursing and my coffee intake seems to have no effect on my LO.

I couldn't stand the smell or taste of it during the first trimester, but from about 14 weeks on I drank a cup of home-brewed coffee every morning (and still do). My mug is probably 10-12 oz. I don't drink tea or eat chocolate, and rarely indulge in a soda. I don't feel guilty about it in the least.

never drank coffee before becoming a SAHM... then I was up to 4 cups a day (2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon) when Wagon Jr. was a toddler. It was tough to cut back from that when I got pregnant this time, but more sleep helped. I now usually have one cup in the mornings. My latest craving has been diet coke though.... I've been drinking several a day, but thankfully they're not nearly as much caffeine as coffee.

I have maybe 16 oz (of Starbuck's mostly milk stuff, or 12 OZ of normal coffee) in a given day, but that tends to be once a week. I do have up to two diet cokes a day. Not good for me, but it seems to help a LITTLE with light-headedness.

Any other coffee drinkers out there... while pregnant? I have stayed away from caffeine for the most part and have never exceeded the 200mg "rule" but I do sometimes feel guilty enjoying a cup a few times a week.

I know many women who completely stay away from full-strength coffee during pregnancy but I am wondering how many of you still enjoy coffee within the acceptable limits?
