I had so much coffee when I was pregnant. My DD seems fine to me. I just decided not to worry about it.

I am a special education teacher and I have heard of this. However, it is still a new idea and it hasn't been researched enough yet to say it's true. Besides, I would think it would be 10 cups a day not 1 or 2.

I don't know what the answer is on the caffeine, but I just wanted to chime in and say that woman has no right to tell you what you can and can not eat. Having to deal with people like that is the number one thing that stresses me out about becoming pregnant.

I think that lady needs to mind her business! It seems whenever someone is pregnant, everyone is the first to tell them what to eat, etc. Eat your chocolate, drink your coffee, have a soda!! ;)

@sorrycharlie: My OB said I could reduce my coffee intake to one coffee per day.
Today, I went to a coffee shop with a friend and said I wanted a cappuccino. the lady said "decaf" and I said "no"
she said "really?" and I said "I only have coffee every 3 weeks or so, I want the real thing--plus my OB said I can have one every day.

And... owning a coffee shop, doesn't the lady know that decaf is really only 50% decaffiented, so I'd rather drink a half cup of real coffee than a whole cup of decaf ANY DAY.

I agree with everyone else. Don't worry about it.

I think that ADHD is waaaaaaaay overdiagnosed these days. It's easy to blame coffee because so many people drink it, but look back at grandma's generation. their parents drank coffee and very few have ADHD (and those cases are probably more correctly diagnosed).

thanks, guys. I still had a coffee the other day (and have one now..lol) but part of me was wondering if I'm already being a bad mom! oy. I totally wish I had a better, more witty comeback for her (and the tylenol chick) but I was just so surprised by their audacity!

@MsLipGloss: LOL - I love your response - perfect!

@sorrycharlie: There is no way to link chocolate and adhd together that I'm aware of. I'm sure it's just a new wives tale. Sorry you have to deal with that.

i have never heard this and i am a child psychologist who works with with lots of ADHD kids....this has never been something we asked parents for example when doing an assessment for ADHD. Sounds kinda ridiculous to me.

I don't believe there is any relationship between the two because with my first daughter I didn't know I was pregnant for quite a while and proceeded to drink an ungodly amount of energy drinks and coffee. My daughter isn't even almost adhd despite her father having it, giving her a higher chance of getting it.

Chocolate loving pregnant women everywhere would be outraged by this if true!

My doc says a cup of coffee and some chocolate daily in pregnancy is fine. I have consumed both in moderation throughout my pregnancy. It annoys me when automatically assume I don't drink coffee because I'm pregnant (oh, let me get you a decaf....um, no thanks).

I've pretty much quit drinking coffee altogether. There was one day that I could barely keep my eyes open at work though so I had half a cup of Keurig coffee.

I'm not a huge soda-person, so I've just drank Vernors/7up for when nausea was bad.

Yep! Suddenly everyone around you becomes a subject matter expert on pregnancy (overnight . . . like they downloaded *Pregnancy for Dummies* directly into their brains), and apparently everyone that has had a horrendous birth story or miscarriage (or knew someone who did which translates to THE ENTIRE PLANET) that they want to *share*.

phew! haha thank you guys! I just ate it anyway. she just had a baby last summer so I thought if anything it would have been someone chiming in to say that that hadn't had kids yet.

(like the co-worker who argued with me 2 weeks ago because i popped a tylenol. I said, "my ob said it's fine." and she goes, "no it's not." ..oh, okay. didn't realize you were a doctor.)

the only time I'd ever say ANYTHING to someone would be if a close friend or family member was like, "woo! wanna light up?" ..why do people think it's totally fine to monitor everything you do when you're pregnant?

Caffeine is found in : coffee, tea, chocolate and soda...
My doc told me I can have 3 caffeines a day... so I pick and choose.

Pfff! Chocolate.... is the winner always. But as long as you keep it in moderation I wouldn't worry about it.

Seriously I haven't been watching what I should or should not eat. Yes, I've had 1 glass of wine, some sushi (maybe 3) cold cuts, mayo.... all the things i crave. ha

p.s. There is no proof of caffeine/chocolate causing adhd that I am aware of . . . and I ride the 200mg of caffeine line daily to try to keep my migraines in check. If you gave her another 5 minutes, I am sure that she would also lobby you to not vaccinate your child and also tell you that sunblock on children causes cancer. Ridonc!

Of course you can have chocolate chips! She probably just wanted your share!

But seriously? ENOUGH with the food policing! It KILLS me that people are hyper-vigilant around pregnant women, and expect perfection (which, I might add, doesn't exist because *hellllooooo* all of the conflicting information!!!), while they shove a partially hydrogenated something or other into their body like it's a just another day in normalsville. *lesigh*

well, caffeine in general. I read in 'the books' that up to 300 mg per day is okay. my doc recommended up to 150mg, in case I accidentally went over, it'd be nbd.

the other day at a school thing they were passing around pastries with chocolate chips - and another woman said I couldn't have them because of the chocolate. I was like, "uh, YES I can have chocolate!" and she goes, "your baby will have adhd!"

..? is there any proof in this? now she has me scared. I don't over do caffeine..if anything, <8oz a day, maybe every other day. sometimes i'll get a mcdonald's frappe instead of a coffee.

some reassurance please??
