It doesn't bother my LO.. but I drink the same amount (usually a diet coke every other day or so) as I did while I was pregnant. I have heard that caffeine can have more of an effect on baby through breast milk if you totally abstained while pregnant.

I drink a TON of coffee and I've never had a problem with any of my babies not sleeping (either at night or napping).

Oh geez... I'm bad... I drink 3-4 cups a day. She's STTN since 8ish weeks (16 weeks now), and is a really calm, easy-going baby though! I had 1 cup from 7 months pregnant - delivery, also.

I've read that it doesn't affect some babies but it did affect my LO. I hadn't had caffeine in forever, like since before I found out I was pregnant. When she was about a week old, I tried to drink one soda and she cried pretty much all afternoon and wouldn't sleep. So I think she was just really sensitive to it and I stopped drinking it.

It doesn't seem to affect my LO. I only drink a medium hot or small iced every couple days. I drank a cup a day - ish - while pregnant so maybe that had something to do with it?? Not sure..

@dagret: me too!

To answer the OP, I haven't noticed anything but I have heard it can build up as well. Maybe cut it out for a week be see if it changes?

@rahlyrah: yeah I was purposefully trying to keep my intake low. Maybe I could have it every so often?

@knittylady: yeah, I was disappointed. I had coffee here and there while pregnant but really missed my daily habit

I took a breastfeeding class last night and the LC said that caffeine can actually build up in the baby's system. She mentioned that you may want to cut back for a few days if you notice a change in your baby. However, I think she was talking about a larger caffeine intake because she said 8-12 oz a day is usually fine. Maybe your LO is sensitive to it?

A has been not a great sleeper, averaging 9.5 hours in a 24 hour period. He's 5 weeks today, so I know he's on the low end of "normal."

I stopped drinking my one 8 oz daily cup of coffee in Sunday, which magically has corresponded to more sleep for him. We also started swaddling again, and getting into more of a routine/schedule, so I'm not sure what did the drink. Of course, it could all just be random. I also think caffeine has a fairly lengthy half-life in babies, so I don't know when it would have left his system.

Have you noticed any correlation in your caffeine intake with your EBF baby?
