It should be okay as long as it's for a very short term, and taken when absolutely necessary.

Both my PCP and my OB said the same thing - when it comes to meds, you have to weigh your options and decide what's worse for the baby: meds for a few days, or a sick mama. But when it comes to something like this, I'd trust your OB or midwife over an urgent care doc.

I had a terrible cough for literally MONTHS this pregnancy. The first time I went to my PCP for it, she told me to take Robitussin and a prescription nasal spray (both class B) on a daily basis and an inhaler (class C) for any bad coughing fits. I took the Robitussin and spray like clockwork but avoided the inhaler because it was class C, until my cough got worse. I figured it was better to use the inhaler 2-3 times a week than literally not be able to breathe.

On my approved list were specific kinds of Tylenol, sudafed, robitussin, and mucinex - basically nothing behind the counter. If it was on the list, I took it. I did this with both pregnancies. My doctors would rather you get better than end up with something worse! DS came out fine! I'm pregnant with little brother and he looks perfect at 32 weeks.

My doctor said that plain Mucinex/Robitussin and Sudafed were OK to take. I would trust your OB!

My OB always said if it's a Tylenol product, like Tylenol Cold & Sinus, it's okay, but not the other kinds.

I got a sinus infection around 14 weeks and my OB said that plain sudafed, mucinex, and robitussin were all okay (no nyquil). I took sudafed just at night so I could sleep for like 3 days, and I did that again a few weeks ago when I got sick again. LO is not here yet but at 36 weeks there is no sign anything is wrong and I'm not worried about it :)

I would listen to your midwife over an urgent care doctor. That being said though, if you feel uncomfortable I would say something to her to see if she has any other suggestions. I know I treated horrible sinus infections and colds with more natural alternatives that my midwife suggested when I was pregnant.

My OB recommended sudafed when I had a nasty cold while I was pregnant with LO. I took it a few times during a week's span, and I have a happy 18 month old with no issues.

My RE is much now conservative than my OB, so even if my on gives me the okay on something I refer to my "okay medicine list" that my RE had given me.

Tylenol cold & mucinex are both on that list.

My OB gives the okay on sudafed after 14 weeks but I don't use it unless the Tylenol doesn't work.

I also drink orange juice & take vitamin c (probably overkill..), LOTS of water, and use my Neti pot.

I took both prescription and OTC meds while pregnant with no issues but every pregnancy and every situation is different. I think the big question is, do you trust your midwife? If not, maybe you should shop around for someone you do trust.

@kml636: I don't know about the affects of your specific situation with the umbilical artery but I had to take Sudafed a few time throughout pregnancy and I had a perfectly healthy little girl. When it comes to what is safe in pregnancy I would be much more apt to trust your midwife than the urgent care doc.

Tell me your experiences being sick pregnant and what your Dr/Midwife told you!!!???

Long story short I've been sick for over two weeks with two colds, which turned into ear infections and sinus infections. I'm 24 weeks. First time, I took no meds then ended up being on antibiotics.

The second time, my midwife encouraged me to take plain sudafed and mucinex to try to avoid having to get antibiotics again. Just went to urgent care last night again and the Dr that saw me there said he would never recommend any pregnant person take them, they aren't' worth the risk as they are "class C". He said Sudafed in particular restricts blood vessels, that is how it works, so it could restrict blood flow to the baby. Well, my baby already has only one umbilical artery so I'm freaking out about having taken three doses of sudafed and even more of mucinex! Ugh.
