I get them pretty frequently. They are stress, trauma and diet related. Eating a big bowl of blueberries did it for me one time. (Turns out blueberries are high in Arginine.) If I start feeling the fever blisters, I can usually take lysine pills and lysine topical balm, I can usually prevent a cold sore from forming. But once I get one, the lysine pills and abreva work for me.

Never been pregnant though so I have no idea if it's safe. I would ask your Dr.

@regberadaisy: Valtrex is a prescription pill for herpes. It works really well, especially when you take it at the first sign, but when I asked the doctor the other day, he said they don't like to give it to people in the first trimester.

I get cold sores often but don't know what Valtrex is? I've taken Zovirax in the past that's a prescription topical med. I discovered this topical patch that's barely noticeable and that's what I've been using lately.

I just had another one pop up this morning. Seriously, I need to stop with the stress! I resorted to the Valtrex this time.

I also skipped the valtrex while pregnant. I used ice, rubbing alcohol to dry it out and then vitamin e oil to heal the skin. Hate cold sores!

I got a bad outbreak at the beginning of my first two pregnancies (although not this one). I'm pretty sure abreva is fine. I also find icing it to help quite a bit.

I just had one two weeks ago :( I have a Valtrex prescription, but didn't bother with it. I just used lots of carmex. It seemed milder than some others I've had, but was certainly more painful.

It comes about when your immune system is weakened or "focusing" elsewhere like when you're pregnant! Valtrex is 100% safe when pregnant (at least it definitely is in 3rd trimester). If you have a doctor that will prescribe it, call him/her. Your OB might as well.

Anyone else get one while pregnant? I am 8.5 weeks and woke up with one this morning. Strangely I got one at this exact point (to the day) when I was pregnant with my son, so I guess maybe it's hormonal. Any suggestions what I can do for it? I know I can't take Valtrex, but are the topical meds like Abreva safe? I can't remember what I did when I got it with him, only that it took forever to go away:(
