@Mamaof2: my DD got herpetic whitlow at 15 months from me when i had a cold sore. i felt awful as she was miserable for about 2 weeks with sores on her hands (she sucks her fingers constantly). i would get her checked out, but it stinks because they couldn't do anything for her. we just had to ride it out. she was already taking antibiotics for an ear infection, so they weren't worried about secondary infections.

It probably is a cold sore if your DH gets them. You could go get her checked out just to be safe, but I wouldn't worry too much.

This is the age most of us are exposed to HSV (the virus causing cold sores). We just don't always notice it! Good to have her checked out but should be fine :)

@BabyPenguinXO: I was so terrified about this when DS was a newborn. I get cold sores and was concerned. I asked the midwife, and she said that since I get them, my immunity would be passed (well, she didn't say exactly that, but something like it), so baby was protected. It's only really a concern when they're super young and mom has never had cold sores.

@Mamaof2: I got them as a child, and it wasn't a huge concern. They're really only scary for little teeny babies. I wouldn't be concerned at 4. But I always call if I need to to feel better.

I would take her just to be sure that it is a cold sore. It is a common virus though which has been endemic in our population for basically ever so I wouldn't worry about it causing harm unless your LO had pre existing immune issues.

@Mamaof2: I hate to say it, but your husband could have transmitted it without knowing he had one. You can be contagious without visible symptoms. If it's looking that bad, might be worth calling the doctor?

There was just an Article going around facebook about a new baby who died because they got herpes from someone who kissed the baby with a cold sore.

It was in Austrailia. It might be worth calling about?

Here's the article

Kids can definitely get them! Do you or DH get them? Anyone else that LO kisses?

How bad is it? That would make me decide whether to call or not.
