I don't think it matters what trimester. Taking it daily helps suppress any outbreaks. I don't know if that's the same as Valtrex, though. </p> <p>I usually get one cold sore near the beginning of pregnancy, and then it seems like the pregnancy makes me immune to them for the rest of the time. They did not want me to take Valtrex in the first trimester. I use that around my nose when I get sick because my skin gets so dry and chapped. After a couple of days, everything is as good as new. The Valtrex is best used before you actually see the cold sore so not sure if it's worth it. </p> <p>I don't get cold sores but I get terrible aphthous ulcers!
