I had bronchitis the week before my scheduled c-section. I was so scared I would be hacking up a lung during the surgery.

Luckily, I was able to stop working and I pretty much rested non-stop the last few days and felt better before she was born.

Rest rest rest!

This happened to me in April.

I got the worst cold of my life when I was 39 weeks pregnant. My parents watched my son for me all week so I could rest, but I was still horribly ill at my planned c-section at 40+6, as was my husband.

Definitely let your doctor know because she can tell you what you can take now and she can make sure you are given cold medicine in the hospital (you're not allowed to bring your own). I did bring some saline nasal spray and my own big box of tissues, which helped a lot.

I honestly felt so much better as soon as the baby was born. The IV fluids were amazing. I was able to sleep propped up in the hospital bed.

I never wore a mask (nor did my husband), and our baby never got sick at all.

It did hurt to cough after the c-section, but it wasn't that big of a deal. I just took more pain medicine for longer than I did the first time. I also took cough suppressants.

Good luck! I hope you feel better than I did.

@tillma: Oh man, this sounds awful. I’m so sorry.
Definitely let your OB know. Besides the above concerns, I’d also be worried about coughing and sneezing right after a c section. I remember everything hurting after mine and I can’t imagine sneezing and coughing immediately after.

I would probably be the mom that would wear a mask for a bit. I got the flu when my son was about 4 months old and I wore a mask until they said I was likely not contagious anymore. It sucked but I felt so much better knowing I couldn’t accidentally cough or sneeze or even breathe on him.

Good luck and keep us posted. Will keep you in my thoughts.

I would definitely contact your OB first thing tomorrow. They might want to postpone your section if possible. If they don’t, as far as being around your newborn just use good hand and respiratory hygiene and your colostrum will provide some immune support to your newborn. Some Moms might choose yo wear a mask until they are feeling better.

This is pretty much my worst nightmare but I have my planned c-section scheduled for Friday morning and I have just come down with a terrible head cold :bummed: This makes me so nervous because I am already somewhat high risk (heart issues) and I just don’t want anymore strikes against me. I am praying my body overcomes it in the next four days but given the fact that pretty much every cold I have had in the last five years has been a long winded affair I am not holding my breath. Anyone had this happen? Do they get worried at all? Also is it worrisome for me to be this sick around my newborn?
