At 18 months we just cut out the paci during the day. At the age of 2, we will cut it out for naps and bedtime. She just loves it so much.

DS is the exact same way. It helps him drift off to sleep, but once it falls and he "dream sucks" and realizes it's missing, he wakes up and gets upset. He then tries to suck on his hand, but hasn't found his thumb yet so he gets even more upset! But I'm tired of getting up and down to re-insert every other minute. Sleep training is on our horizon soon.

Weird thing is, if his paci falls out while he falls asleep in the car seat and dream sucks, he doesn't wake up or get upset! I'm so confused....

We still use a paci at almost 8 months and it's a wubbanub. LO is able to put it in her mouth by herself at night so we don't have an issue with it at all. And she's now attached to the stuffed animal part and uses it as a pillow. I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon

@hilsy85: I'm thinking that might be the best option as well.. She wakes about 3 times a night and sometimes just for paci, sometimes for food. During the 4 month regression, it was a lot more.

@buffalove: That's my thought if we don't cut it out now. Its either set her up with lots of them, or none at all. I will admit - I do love that if she's crying in public or just sleepy, a paci calms her right down...

@Mrs. Lovejoy: ahh gotcha! yeah we went through that phase...life got much better when he could stick it back in his mouth himself! He also uses a lovey which helped soothe when he couldnt find the bink. now i put him to bed with like 4 binkies in his crib, and he occupies himself nicely in the morning by rotating them, hahaha.

When we swaddle weaned at 5 months we dropped the paci and replace with a lovey. It wasn't terrible. Is your lo waking a lot thru the night for you to replace it?

When we swaddle weaned we dropped the paci. He kept taking it out and I wasn't going to go in to put it back every 2 mins. That was around 4 months.

@buffalove: she's waking up just to get her paci back and she's become reliant on it. I'm also nervous it will be much harder to get rid of it when she's older. But I don't know! :-/

@Lindsay05: she does have a lovey (A&A) and she pets it and stuffs it in her mouth. Haha. Not sure if it soothes her or not yet.

DS is a binky addict, at 16 months I now limit it to bed time, car rides, or when he's getting super tired or needs comfort. He knows to hand it to me when I get him up from his nap, for example. He's had a very strong need to suck since he was a newborn, and it really helps him self soothe. I don't have plans to get rid of it until at least age 2.

Can I ask why you want to get rid of it?

When we did CIO, we pretty much cut it out. Could you replace it with a lovey?

I'm so torn ladies... LO cannot fall asleep without a paci. And it's our fault. We've always given her one to fall asleep and when she dropped it as a newborn, we always stuck it back in.

SO and I are trying to figure out if we should just cut it out cold turkey or wait until she's older.

Advice please- I feel so conflicted!!

ETA: if you dropped cold turkey, how did you get LO to fall asleep? She's an escalator and CIO hasn't proven successful thus far.
